Okay, maybe I am just disconected from reality or something. I have never heard of drinking salsa before a race but I saw a lady do it today! She drank some green stuff, a slim fast and salsa. Straight salsa. She offered me some but I told her I had eaten my standard oatmeal with walnuts and would eat when the race was over. I told her if she puked she would need to get off the main course! How did she do? She came in second in her age bracket!! May have to buy some salsa!!! What's the strangest (to you) pre-race activity you have ever seen?

To be honest I've never heard of that before, and was about to say I don't believe you, but I guess I can understand why someone would drink salsa... It does have it's nutrients, tomato's, and well a lot of other things. But hey, it worked for her so that's all that counts right? Well I've never heard of or seen anything strange or bizarre when it comes to pre - race activities. I don't normally go to races, though I do go to walks for charities.

I asked her specifically what it was "good" for... I figured she had some sort of reason for drinking it at 8 in the morning! She said its nutrients helped connect the brain and muscles up in some way!

OMG, that is crazy! Someone where I work drank salsa once... but he was drunk and accidentally grabbed it off the table at a bar, instead of his drink. Everyone looked at him in disbelief but he was too drunk to care. I ate a banana before my first race and it proved to be too much for me. The second one I ate 2 of those sports beans from Jelly Belly, but they were disgusting and that would all I could manage. For the bike race I think I'll go for eating more if possible. I haven't seen anything that crazy yet. Although I always think the people running the entire course first right before the 5K are crazy. How can that be a warm up rather than taking up a bunch of their precious energy? I guess I don't have enough stamina yet, but I'm trying to work up to doing a Thanksgiving 10K.

That is awesome! Let us know how you do! I might like to do a half marathon sometime. Tomorrow I'm going to get a feel for the marathon distance by doing the bike tour of the marathon.

I'm looking at a couple of Turkey Trot 5K's. Planning on the Chicago half-marathon next year then the Chicago marathon the next! Still hanging at the 5K level for now though! Headed to one this morning actually. My nephew is running with me! Yeah... if I ran 5K before the 5K I'd be done! lol! Gotta work on that I guess!!

Well this summer was when I started running and I showed up at my first race (2 mile) and was amazed at all the runners who were running BEFORE the race. I can understand it now but at the time it completely baffled me. I was under the impression that everyone was like me and thought 2 miles was an eternity. I laugh at my own ignorance of then now.

Yeah, I remember wondering about that too! I was like, if I run first I won't have the energy to race! Now I understand.... but I don't get the drinking salsa before!!

The only running I do before is just maybe a tenth of a mile or so. The first race I decided to skip the long line for the bathrooms and go to the ones at the other side of the park. Then I had to run to the start line to get there in time (with a few minutes to catch my breath). But then for the next 5K I had planned to get there early and do a 1 mile warm up. Instead I woke up too late, got there, got my t-shirt and number, ran back to the car to put away the t-shirt, and then ran back to head over to the starting line. For the Halloween 5K I doubt I'll do much warm up because my friend will be running it with me and if she warms up I'm afraid she won't even finish. So she will warm up during the race, I told her to take the first half mile or so at a pace that feels slow, and then if she wants to bust out some more and take off, that's fine. I doubt she will, but you never know. Besides, I think just finishing will be pretty good with such a short time to train.

The only food I've seen someone eat before a prolongued running session was 6 slices of bacon and they payed for it dearly. BUT SALSA!? I can't eat anything before I run or else I'll puke it all up. Is there any strategy to consuming things before a race and actually holding it all down or does it differ between individuals. My mom has the same "problem".

I think it's different for everyone. I have my standard bowl of oatmeal with walnuts just like every other morning. I haven't hurled yet, and I don't intend to! I would be a little afraid to drnk so much acidic things or even eat dairy before I run. I've just tried to be careful and so far, so good!
