Horses as "pets" yeah or neah!

We have four horses all together. We don't really ride them that much. We adopted all of them from rescues because we had the available space to accommodate them. When we first got them we did try our hand at riding. However, after a few serious injuries I stopped riding all together. The other family members that tried their hands at riding lost interest after a few years. This is not a bad situation for the horses. They get to spend their days relaxing. We do not keep them in stalls so they are able to wander around the back end of our property. I have had a few heated discussions with people who view themselves as "horse folk". They have told me to get rid of the horses because they are too expensive to keep as "pets". We can afford to care for them and it is my choice to do so. So we have kept them. What do you think?

hello, my personal view of point is never have hourse pets, but in represent of my company, I would like to say yeah!
My company is specialize in manufacture and export all kinds of textile products, include horse clothes, we know that is very expensive, and sometimes our customers would make fuzzy about 1 cm's different in measurement! From this you can see that, those hourse lovers/owners love their hourse that much! And because of this, hourse supplies are very expensive! As a matter of fact, it is also very complicate to make those closes.

I have had 2 mini horses for 9 years now - people make comments to me about what is the point of having a horse - especially if you dont ride them - but I love horses - I think they are amazing animals. In the past 9 years my views on animals has changed and If I was to do it all over, I would still have mini's - I just wouldnt have bought them, I would have got them from a rescue - with all the abused and unwanted animals out there - I just dont believe in buying animals anymore. so props to you for rescueing horses!
My mini's live at my house - I see them daily - several times a day - to feed - water and muck the stalls - they are not kept in the barn and I adore them. Sadly I am looking at rehoming them because my husband and I just started our own business and I can not keep up with everyone (I have alot of rescued pets) and work my job and for our business.
Horses are alot of fun, are not as stupid as people think and I think make great pets. Of course in the ideal world - all animals would live a free life - but its not the idealworld is it.
If you want to have horses as pets, and get enjoyment out of spending time with them...then by all means go for it....if it wasnt for you, why these animals could be dog food!

Thank you for your kind words. Enjoy your horses while you have them. However, it is admirable that you might re-home them rather then keep them, but not be able to care for them properly. It takes great strength to make that decision. Good luck with your new business!

I've never owned a horse or even ridden a horse before, but I think there beautiful majestic animals and I've always had a strange fascination with horses, and if I was or became financially stable I might consider owning maybe one or two horses, but only if I could afford to give the horse the proper care. because owning such a large animal can be very expinsive and I dont think that anyone should take on such literally big responsibility unless they can afford it.
So to answer your question yeah if you can afford to properly care for the animal, but neah if you can't afford it.

I think that you are doing a great thing by caring for these horses. Horses make wonderful pets, in my opinion. I had a few around for a while while I was growing up, and currently, my mom has three. She doesn't ride hers very often, only about once a year. Yes, they do cost a bit to care for, but they are such smart and loving animals. I couldn't imagine ever going to my mom's house and not seeing hers.
I think that if you enjoy having them around and can care for them, keep them.

A horse would be a great pet but I couldnt afford one. Only people that really love horses buy them here. Usually those people are rich enough to waste money on having a pet they can only see on the weekend. Yeah, most people buy a horse but keep it at the stable.

Good for you , but horses should be ridden. That's where you get to create the special bond that comes between human and horse. Have you thought about taking lessons on how to ride? Maybe your horses could be taken somewhere where other people could ride them. Like an equestrian camp anyway just a suggestion. I think that horses are beautiful animals and God bless you for caring for them. But horses need a purpose.

Those are some good suggestions. I will look into them. However, the ones that are still young enough to ride are not all the way broke. We learned that the hard way. We are looking into breaking them all the way. Some of the people we looked into have rather harsh methods of training and we do not agree with the methods they use. We believe in more humanitarian methods of training.

Wow, I am surprised that anyone would have the nerve to tell someone else what to do with their own lives! It's crazy! If you have the money to feed your horses and take care of them, why not keep them? I love horses A LOT and I think its great they get to live out their days just being horses and roaming around at your place. If they've got plenty of food and water, (and hoof trims and vet visits) well, it sounds like horse heaven at your place!

if you can afford them, then by all means keep them - obviously if they were at rescues, then they were probably before they came to you not in such good shape and probably why they are basically unrideable. Its like the feral cats I rescue, they will never be lap cats, but at least they are safe and cared for

if you can afford to keep them and look after them, do what you want with them. i'm a horse person, and don't like them sitting in the paddock doing nothing. but everyone is different. we used to have a mare who'd been with us since the mid 80's and my bro and i had been there done that with her. drag her out the paddock and go, my son even won his first ribbon on her. she was to good to sell and became mums pet, we lost her to old age easter 06. mums now got a new pet, our warmblood. we've had her for 11 yrs now and also been there done that with her, she fell in the paddock a few yrs back and bust her shoulder along with a foot problem we can't ride her to often. not had much luck yet with her a foals, but she's great with my son. dads not bothered about her being in the paddock and she's looked after.
have fun with the horses.

It really was not a matter of being done with them. When we rescued them the organizations lied to us about the horses being broke. For example, when I rode one of them I was thrown off and almost broke my back. We are finishing their training eventually. However, not just yet.

Do not let the other people talk you into getting rid of the horses. If you can afford to feed them then if you want to keep them you should. You have a place for the horses to wander around and relax and it is your property.
