i received my ipod nano on 2007 as a birthday gift from my parents and now, it has stopped working. the screen is just pitch black and it wouldn't charge. it is practically lifeless. i brought into the apple shop and they said that they only do software repair and they do not open the ipod and fix hardware. this ipod is really valuable to me and i'd like to have it fixed so i could use it again.
what should i do? i don't want to hire just anybody because they might take some genuine parts and replace it with fake ones. help my lottees!

Sounds like you need a new battery.
I bet Apple has technical support phone number you can call. I bet you could give them a call and see what they can do. They will probably have you send it in to them to get it repaired. I'm sure it will cost something to have it repaired, but at least you will have a working ipod again.
I can see the Apple store themselves not fixing it, but why couldn't they send it in to like one of their repair shops?
If they still won't fix it, you could try the Geek Squad at Best Buy.

By the way, I'm surprised the apple store didn't offer to fix your ipod. THey're support page says "An Apple Retail Store is the best place to test-drive and explore Apple products, receive hands-on technical support and hardware repair from a Mac Genius, and get personal training on your new Mac with a One to One membership." Its specifically says hardware repair, so really they should fix it!
Here is their support page: http://www.apple.com/support/contact/
