Are you in a local writers group/club?

I am currently a member of the Lake Havasu Writers Group and I really enjoy it for several reasons. Writing can be a very lonely job/hobby, so this groups helps me get out of the house and meet new friends who also enjoy writing. We have almost 35 members in it and we meet twice a month to critique writing projects together at our local library. We also have a social network and website. We also meet on the side for informal readings and parties.
There are writers groups everywhere. Are you in a group or club? Tell me about yours! How often to you meet? Does it help you with your writing? Does your group have a website?

I don't belong to a writers group or club locally but am looking for a writers critique group in my area - I do know of one writer's group at my church but it's all 'little old ladies' and I know I would hear nothing but 'oh that's beautiful' or 'oh that's wonderful' and not the cut throat truth I really need to improve :) Pats on the back are great but I also need to develop my writing skills ...

I've actually connected with another AC writer who has taught writing on college level - he's my 'editor' how it first started was he messaged me "Faith this is good but you could be great" gotta love it :) He doesn't 're-write' my work but gives suggestions 'you could do this' or 'this might be better' also really helping with my grammer, punctuation and such. Really wonderful learning experience for me.
Don't get me wrong - the cute comments are encouraging but I want to be as close to 'great' as I can :)

Oh yes, I do know what you are talking about. We have several geriatric members in our group but we also have several younger and serious writers looking to get published. I do understand what you mean though. I don't appreciate the simple compliments I get for my writing when I know there is need for improvement that another's eyes can catch. I have a few online friends who help me with proofreading and critiquing. Perhaps you can find some friends to meet with online here at MyLot. Good luck with finding the help and camaraderie we writers need sometimes to improve our craft.

I belong to the Florence Poets Society. I also am trying to belong to the Western Mass Women Poets, although that group has yet to get off the ground. We keep having issues with scheduling because of children, H1N1, and so on. The last incarnation of it that I heard about was that it was going to become an online group. I signed up but so far no postings have occurred. I love attending the Florence Poets though. It takes something really important to keep me away. I've actually just become the convener of the writing group. I start next week, and I'm really nervous. I think too many people spend too much time writing alone by themselves with only them, the computer, and whatever house pets they have. If you submit your work for critique in a friendly environment, which all writers groups should be or you shouldn't go, you'll make better work and be more inclined to actually let go of your little darlings and submit them into the wider world.

I don't even think there is a writing group where I live. People around here don't read books. Well, that's not entirely true. Hmmm. Now you've made me wonder. I might have to check that out.
I've lived here 20 some years and most I see are people who stand around or sit in bars. Not sure they've read anything other than a McDonald's menu.
They probably wouldn't get my book at all.

When I first moved here to Havasu, I went to our local library. Most of the writers groups I have been involved with usually meet at either a large roomy book store like Hastings or Barnes & Nobles while others meet in a community room at a school or library. I found out about my current group from the library. I just went to the librarian and asked if there was a writers group in town. It was that simple.
If your town or city doesn't have a group you can always check the internet for such groups. They do exist and they even offer online workshops and critiquing. Good luck with your search. It really helps to keep this writer inspired and motivated. :)

Well, if you ever feel the need for help and inspiration, writers groups are definitely recommended. I have been with mine for almost 2 years now and I am so glad we have such a good one here in Havasu. Good luck with your blog!
