Hair in the hairbrush

It never ceases to amaze me just how much hair ends up in my hairbrush every day. It is a wonder I even have any hair left on my head! When I had really short hair I never noticed how much hair was or was not coming out from the roots and then when I started growing it out it seemed like there was no end to the amount of older hairs that were coming loose at the scalp and ending up on my hairbrush. At first I thought it was breakage but I have fairly healthy hair and there is a very thick mass of it. When I look at the volume of what I loose in a day it is astounding sometimes, especially since it doesn't seem to be thinning out! Perhaps I should save it and make dolls wigs, ha ha!

Everyone says the same thing about me. I can walk and my hair will fall out. It's a little thin, but it always has been. How funny! I bet I could make a wig too. Maybe we can start a wig shop.

I don't even want to think about that! I mostly do things to her in private. I never know how she will react so I don't want her to cry if she thinks I have insulted her. LOL I usually get "OH MOM!" out of her. If I can do that I must be doing my job right. LOL

Pffffft! You are so hilarious! Does your daughter think you're funny or is she at that stage where everything you do is weird or embarrassing or crazy?

When My Hair Was long hairs would come loose, I guess it's from brushing my hair with my fingers, etc. My husband also like to play with my hair, pulling it.. so it may be from that too. I have split ends, so it could be that too.

Long hair also weighs more. Sometimes the weight is more than the root can handle. As for split ends, trimming them helps to reduce the weight and makes the hair look more in control or smoother.

I didn't think about the weight having to do with the root, but lol, that's just common sense right? I've always heard trimming the split ends helps to keep control of them, but nothing about weight. I guess that makes sense, with split ends the hair isn't proportionally.

I am always a step away from shaving my head because it is so much work to have natural hair this length. I either keep it braided up or occasionally I flat iron it to give me a bit more control over it.

you know in Victorian times they saved the hair and made jewelry out of it... http://www.victorianhairjewelry.com/victorianhairwork.html http://www.hairworksociety.org/ http://www.victorianhairartists.com/

I always kind of thought the use of hair like the flowers done into wreaths were kind of weird - guess this is a case of "too much time on their hands" and limited material...

I do know that and a couple years ago I came across a website of a woman who uses her hair to create elaborate "drawings." Her work is both cool and creepy, lol.

My hair is so thick I am not worried about the loss. If I have it up in braids and then take it down it is amazing the amount of hair I end up with in the waste basket. Someone else would freak out and think they might be balding but my hair has always been that way.

It's probably a question of perspective. Everyone loses a percentage of their hair every day, and if you have grown your hair you have more, so it follows there's more to lose. Also, if the hairs are longer, they're more noticeable in the brush, so I don't think you need to worry - just make sure your shower drain doesn't get blocked up. The main thing is, your hair is healthy.

It is quite long and I know it's normal; it just amazes me to see all that hair! I sometimes think I should be recycling it, LOL!

If it doesn't seem to be thinning out, I wouldn't worry. It is normal to lose a certain amount of hair, and especially if you have longer hair you will notice more what arrives in the hairbrush! I had a problem with hair loss, to the point of small bald patches, for a while, and it was quite scary as it was coming out in handfuls sometimes and I wondered if I was going to lose it all. I found out it was related to my diabetes and a huge amount of stress I'd been going through at the time - now it is still a little thinner, but luckily I had really thick hair to start with and it is behaving pretty normally now!

I also experienced severe thinning of my long hair. Found out it was my thyroid that was causing the problem. I agree it is scary when your hair is falling or coming out at a rate that is not normal for you. My doctor put my fears to rest.

Wow, that must have been very traumatic to have that happen. I am always tempted to cut mine off again but I have spent so much time growing it out that I just can't quite bring myself to do it. I hope your health has improved and that you are no longer having hair loss issues.

Doesn't it make you wonder sometimes :) We have 3 girls in our family and we all have long hair and my husband always says we could dress a person in the hair off the brushes sometimes. I am always saying that I am wondering when we are going to wake up bald.

You could send it my way. Ever since I had my last child my hair has begun to get very thin. I really hate it because I used to have really thick naturally curly hair, now I constantly trying to style it in a way that does not show how thin it is getting. My hair is still reasonably long, but getting thin on top, not something a woman wants to experience.

It could be a nutritional or homonal thing. I have always heard that getting pregnant made your hair grow more.

Might be a great way to supplement your income Canellita!! Of course you could always put it in a brown paper bag and save it just in case you should find yourself going bald and then you could have a wig made for yourself, (I think that is the way I would go)!!! Actually the average person looses approximately 100 to 150 hairs per day from brushing, running their fingers through it etc. which isn't all that much considering it is old hair ready to come out and the average person has somewhere around 100,000 hairs on their head. So obviously while you are loosing the 100 to 150, new hairs are growing in all of the time to replace the lost ones...HOPEFULLY!!! You said that it looks like so much hair since your hair was growing out a bit now which is very normal because the length creates an optical illusion of more and many times the hair might actually be wound around a few bristles a few times making it appear more. So Chin Up, I'm pretty sure you won't be needing a wig for a while yet!

Well if you shed 200 + hairs a day then all the better!! You'll be able to have a wig made much faster than most people...Baldy!!! That is an amazing story about how they are using hair these days to clean up oil spills, I am going to look on the Internet for more information about that! Thanks also Canellita for Best Response, I really appreciate it!

You are hysterical! I am sure I must shed 200 hairs a day, LOL! I may start keeping it in a bag after all though. I was watching a show on planet green (Sat TV channel) and they were using hair to clean up oil spills! It was amazing!

Hello canellita, well i must say that you are really very frustrated with those falling hair.Have you started treating them? are you going to any doctor or dermatologist? Well i can give you few suggestions at home to be done if you want. You can mix some olive oil, almond oil, and castor oil together. Castor oil should be in 10 to 20 drops only as it is very sticky and thick. You can massage this slowly into your hair and scalp.I bet you will soon have great hair. You can wash it off the next morning if you put it before going to bed. But dont forget to put your shower cap before you sleep or the bed and the covers will be oil stained.

You misunderstand, I am not frustrated, I am fascinated. When I see the amount of hair on my hairbrush I am amazed I still have so much on my head!

I think the longer your hair the more hair will be in the hairbrush. If my hair is short I do not get much in my hairbrush. Sometimes I let it grow a little long and there is a little more. It is normal thing to lose some of your hair everyday everyone does.

My hair is probably longer now than it has ever been. I guess that is why it seems like so much more hair than I am used to seeing.

Unless it is in braids I have to brush it regularly to avoid tangling. It doesn't matter how much I brush in a day when I do it again there is more hair. I just wonder where it is all coming from and how it seems to be never ending, LOL.

Hi Canellita! In that we're the same. I have a thick mane and everytime i took a shower a handful of hair will be at the bathroom floor and the hairbrush, well cleaning it is becoming a major problem! But I got a tip from a television show how to clean the hairbrush... according to it, before using the hairbrush put a piece of used stockings to it, so after brushing you can easily remove the stocking along with the loose hairs and also the hair can be used as fertilizer!

That is a creat tip! I have used gause on a hairbrush before in the same way. I have one of those brush cleaning tools now that works quite well. Just a note about hair as fertilizer. While it's great for adding nitrogen to the soil it takes a long time to compost and you will want to cut it into little pieces. Also it has to be completely clean and free of oils and styling products.

Oh my gosh i felt the same way except for i thought it was a hair care product i used that made it fall out. I used to get so upset over seeing how much hair was in my brush but i eventually got over it.

i cant even fatheum when i look at the hairbrush at the end of the day as well... i cant see the difference in my head but what i see in the brush seems like it would have left a bald spot on my head!! Doll hair that would be a good use for it... my younger daugter once used it to make a birds nest ! LOL of course it didnt last long, LOL

There are many medical reasons your hair may be coming out that way. There are other reasons that are not medical. For example: Thyroid problems, health issues, stress, puberty, menopause, pregnancy are some of the medical reasons although there may be others. Non-medical examples include: Type of hair brush, over brushing, hair dyes, hair dryers or high heat, perms, type of shampoo or conditioner. There are things you can do. Have your doctor determine the healthiness of your hair. Lower the heat level of your hair dryer or curling iron. Clean out hair brush often. Change shampoo and conditioner to see if there is different result. Avoid perming and dying the hair too often. Make sure hair accessories are not too tight or pulling on hair. Do not brush hair when it is wet. As for making doll wigs, that is a possibility. It is a creative idea for recycling. Go for it.

My hair has always been this way. It is mostly very fine but I have a huge mass of it. I rarely use heat and I don't use any chemical treatments. It has always been healthy and I have never had to worry about it. I don't know why I seem to notice it more now but I guess this is also the longest I have ever let it grow.

Every time I brush my hair and comb my hair I notice too their is a lot hairs left on my comb. Thus,it worries me and then I learn it is only naturals as the hair fall to be replace by new hairs. It only becomes a problem when one suffered from extreme hair loss due to alopecia which is a hair condition which could makes any genders susceptible to it by means of hereditary or through environmental defects which may be the reasons the hair is falling.

That is why I like to use the brush because it catches all those loose hairs. I have so much hair that it is not even noticeable when it comes out.

...Hi Canellita, Your posting is interesting. I am not sure how much hair a person normally loses in a day, and I would think that all of us are different. You do mention that your hair is healthy and that you have a lot of it, but you might just have a slight vitamin deficiency of some kind. I might just mention it to your doctor and see what he or she thinks. Is your energy level still the same? If it is, the amount of hair loss might just be new hair coming in and old hair leaving. Take care.
