I had to go pick my watermelons Tuesday due to frost on them over night. This is the 2nd night of frost, and, the plants are TOO huge to try to cover. So anyhow here's a photo of the 2 largest I had out there. There's another discussion about them coming out soon as well. Next year I have to plant them about 2 weeks sooner than I did this year as I have 4 or 5 still growing, but they are no where near ripe and won't last the frosty nights due all week. Have you ever planted something only to realize it won't ripen fully before the winter weather arrives? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

Nice melons! What a pair! I hope they're ripe (watermelons don't ripen off the vine like tomatoes do). For next year, pick off any blossoms or small fruit that forms in August. They won't have time to ripen but will take away energy from the vines that could go into the larger ones. You could always pickle the unripe ones. Bon apetite!

Oh no, so sorry you had to pick your watermelons before time but so glad you were able to keep a couple of them. If you know anyone who has horses maybe they would want the others? I know horses love watermelon at least the horses I have known do.

Same here in Minnesota as the season is done. It's been in the 30's at night and getting down into the 20's for the next few nights. Next year I am going to do better than this with the melons. I learned a lot from this first time experience with growing them. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

Well, at least you got the two and they do look delicious :) I can't recall having this happen to me but a few years ago I was all excited about the lilac bush next to my house coming in bloom - I love lilacs and spreading vases of them all over the house. Sadly, a late frost hit and distroyed every single bloom. Was another year before I got to enjoy them :(

I think my worst was last year, if you remember I had almost 1/4 acre of garden and we got late frost predicted. I had 2 grandkids helping me. We took every pot, bucket, tarp, and sheet I could find and covered everything but the corn. Only damage next morning were 2 tomatoe plants got some damage - the pots covering them had blown off in the night before the frost hit. Hail storm later in the summer was another story. I was home alone and the hail was not expected - just hit in a matter of minutes. The pumpkin and gourds got hit the worst - hug leaves had marble sized holes in them but the plants survived :)

I know the feeling. We are expecting snow showers in a few days. Yeah I have planted things that I didn't think they would't be ready before the cold hits. The other year I had eggplant, but I got it for free so I figured if the plants makes it then YAY, if not oh well it didn't cost me anything. I also tried okra this year and I only got one pod, I probably should of started it earlier as well. But I had no idea and one never knows til they try especially if no one else grows it either.

I know the feeling that's one of the reasons we don't put up holiday lights. That and everytime we turned around a bulb was out ect and that was just our first year doing it so we gave up. I have to have hubby dig up our lid for our septic tank so we can get that drained before the ground freezes.

I love watermelon. It's quite expensive here in our country.

hi Grandpa Bob yes we used to grow tomatoes and have a lot that were not clear ripe and then the frost hit so my mom would bring them in vine and all.we would use those that were ripest then she would make what she called picalilly out of the rest of them.I have probably misspelled that but it was a sort of relish we used with meat, and it was made with green onions and tomato and some green pepper in it.

Your watermelons look great, we had a lot of rain this year so ours did real good this year, they got huge. our warm weather last a little longer here in Tennessee, so we have not had the problem of things not getting ripe enough.
