I am stuck at the lowest position at my workplace!!!

I am a door greeter at Wal-Mart. I don't really like my job. The only reason I have to do it is because I got demoted from working at the return desk because I accidentally cashed a customer's payroll check. It was the first mistake that I have had since my ten years of being employed there. I felt really bad and humiliated when I was made the main example at our cashier meetings. I have been a door greeter for almost a year and a half now. I am hoping that I can move up in my job but I am starting to lose hope since they keep hiring new people and moving them to better positions instead of giving me a chance. Do you have a similar story? Do you have any advice?

Hi, tvstray Welcome to Mylot.
The way I see it, you have 2 choices: move on and find another job or be the best door greeter there is. Most of the time, employees get promoted because the management see their potential. They may be so effective in their position that management would decide to put the employee in another position to make use of his full potential.
However, if you think you will never be happy in your current workplace anymore, then maybe it's time for you to try something new.
Hope all will be well with you soon!

My husband works for Wal*Mart as a door greeter. He's going to be responding to this discussion as well. In any case, he is a courtesy associate and it is the lowest position at our wal*mart atleast. I don't think they should have humiliated you like that, you can now cash payroll checks whether you be an employee or a customer. They should have seen it as a mistake, but I guess they didn't.
Sorry you've been demoted.

woops I am sorry, he is not a door greeter, he is a cart pusher. I guess I was reading your discussion, then responded and while responding was talking to my husband... but he is a cart pusher.

Yeah I am a Cart Pusher even though the technical title is Courtesy Associate even though over the walkie talkie they call us Stockman and I have no idea why,or what that is supposed to mean.

That is absolutly ridiculous and unfair!!! Ten years and you make a small mistake like that and you get demoted!??!?! Ridiculous! Have you tried looking for a new job? Maybe you'd be happier somewhere else that wouldn't treat a long time employee like that.
You could research over the internet for companies that are good to work for...."Top Ten Companies To Work For"...I've seen an article on the internet like that before! lol. You could apply somewhere new and be happier in a better position at a better work place!
Good luck! :( :)

I am sorry for you misfortune. I do so independent contract work at Wallyworld and have a former familymember who is an assistant manager there. This company demands a lot of its employees but seem to treat them as disposable assets. You are tenured and probably not desirable to have around but to grandfather employment rules. Your pay, even as a greeter is probably much better than the new employees receive. The thinking is probably that if you are made to work in a position that is not desireable to you, you might eventually quit.
We all make mistakes, all of us. Do not hang your head about the past. Stand tall and be the best greeter you can be and keep your job. You can always get a part-time job doing something you like better. If you quit, they win and your benefits that have been secured go out the window. Let your kindness and Wallyworld smile be your revenge! Don't let 'em see you sweat!

If you're not happy then find another job. I'm sure there's something for you out there. Just try to be careful not to commit mistakes again that can lead you to lose your career and job

Hi tvstray
The more you stay on your current job (and hate it)the people who demoted you are successful in their objective. Their main objective was to humiliate you and make you feel bitter.
Quick advise is to quit the job and get one that suits your capabilities.
All the best

that's sad. in my case, i don't allow anyone to do that to me.i am referring to getting myself in a shameful situation.if you're not ahppy with your job now then better find another one. if you want to have a better position, you must qualify yourself for that. enroll in a post graduate course like taking masteral units or upgrade yourself with trainings.there are lost cost trainings in some schools that are related to your field.

Hi tvstray, Welcome to myLot and I hope you will enjoy your time here, make lots of friends and some money. This is a good site where you will get paid if you start discussions and comment on the discussions that others post. Check out other things here so that you are taking advantage of everything available. Now to you're discussion, you made a mistake and were demoted to greeter, now I would suggest that you be the best greeter that Wal-Mart has ever had. You are there for a purpose, be proud of what you do, and hold your head high. Someday you will have a higher position. Blessings.

Have you tried talking to who ever is in charge of changing your position. I would ask if I could speak to them and then tell them how you feel. Explain that you have been there for 10 years and you made one mistake in all of that time, and that while you accepted your punishment you would like to know when your one mistake will be forgiven and you can move to another position in the store. Then they will either move you or give you a point blank reason why and tell you exacty why you are still at the greeter position. If they give you the impression that they are never going to move you then I would start looking for another job. If they are going to be that way then you will never move and working there is just a waste of time that is never going to get you anywhere. You won't know unless you talk to them. They may have just not thought about moving you and therefore being the squeeky wheel wil get you what you want, or they might tell you something you don't want to hear but at least you will know the truth of your situation and what your chances of moving are. It's time to start talking.

I feel for you. From what I can tell Walmart seems to take advantage of their workers. There has been a real erosion in workers rights in the United States and all over the world for that matter.Walmart makes so much profit. They are the largest employer in the world.Unfortunately a lot of their profit is made from capitalizing on their ability to take advantage of so many desperate people. There are so many people out of work and Walmart knows this.Walmart can use intimidation tactics on their workers or as they call them associates.Unfortunately in your case it seems to me as if they are using you as an example.Another scare tactic towards the other workers. To send the others the message"Obey us or look what happened to so and so".Also to drive home the point that they ultimately have all of the power. My advise to you is get away from Walmart as fast as you can.One of the main tactics that Walmart uses is that the showcase certain individuals that have somehow miraculously worked themselves up through the company ladder to a gravy high paying management position after starting out with the company unloading trucks or something.I mean what are the odds of this happening huh.Probably have a better chance of winning the lotto.Just another way to dangle the carrot and keep some unrealistic dream going in all of the other average workers head.Until they have used them up or feel like getting rid of them for a younger model. This along with not paying their workers a living wage. Not letting you form a union.I must confess that I shop at Walmart because they do have low prices but I often wonder at what cost.I wish you luck

Yes, we all know that sinking feeling. I guess, if there is no headway,I will move onto the next job at a different supermarket. Perhaps, even go back to school and learn a new trade. It is made for self-esteem not to be promoted, demoted or passed over. These management people can be very unforgiving. So, why give them the chance to gloat on our failure?

Sorry to hear that. So does this demotion a decrease in pay also? If you are so unhappy there, I suggest you look for something else. With 10 years of retail experience under your belt, you have some job solid pros on your resume, and employers look at longevity at your previous jobs. You don't have to up and leave right away, but look around and apply. You shouldn't have to go to work every day feeling humiliated and worthless.

I think if you don't really enjoy your job there is no reason for you to stay there. Why don't you look for another job? I'm not telling this to discourage you but as a friend I want to help you with this simple advice. Why don't you try to get out fom that box and try to explore outside. I know you can find a job much better than you have now. But if you still want to stay in that place it's up to you. May be if they realized that you already learned from your mistake they will give you a higher position. Good luck Friend..

hi tvstray30 I do hope you are a lot more civil than the'
last door greeter I met at Walmart, he scolded my two
friends for taking the electric chairs outside the store'to
wait for our van from the Gold Crest retirement center. now
I told him that they could neither one stand for any length
of time, and we were waiting for our van to come pick us up
then we would return the chairs, and he got really nasty. There
was no excuse for that at all. So do your job and be really nice, I bet some one from the top lAyer will see that you belong up in the ranks, not as a door greeter. good luck. I would
actively ask to be moved up, the squeaking wheel gets the
grease you know. try it.

I believe if you are not happy with your job then you better do something to find one that you will enjoy better. Of course being demoted is so humiliating so I do understand your predicament. Nevertheless I believe you have the capacity to find a job that will suit your qualification and at the same time will make you feel better and happier. If you don't like the job then junk it and do find another one and I wish you all the best in your quest

I understand your predicament, doing a work that is not suited in our well is really frustrating and a real torture. I think the company is punishing you but that's becoming unfair. If you won't like your job try to look for another, maybe you start finding one now before your self-esteem will sunk into the bottom.

Wow, that's ridiculous that ONE mistake has put you in that position. That's not fair. I think you should talk to a supervisor about it. It's just not fair! TEN years! At my job, I accidentally sent through a stolen credit card for a $300 purchase.. And I was not demoted. Merely slapped on the wrist. You should work on getting a new job, transferring to a different Wal-Mart (if you can), or somehow get the heck out of there. Does your 10 years of being an employee mean nothing to them? That's just disrespect if you ask me. I would try to get out of it. It seems scary to do something new, but there has to be a company that will treat you with more dignity and gratification than your current one.

trade jobs, maybe....
I'm a screen printer. I push ink that is really too thick through a screen all day. The ink is too think because the boss has decided we don't need the extender to make if more pliable. Well, gave myself a hernia pushing the ink, messed up my feet in my last job lifting their heavy magnets. I need something that I don't have to lift much, is real easy and not too physically stressful, offers insurance.
And well, I was think about your job!!
How much are you paid?
How physically demanding is it?
And, is there insurance?
Don't care how much it's paying, got a feeling it's not gonna matter much longer anyways, since the money is gonna be worthless.

...Hi tvstray30, Welcome to the ranch. It appears that they want to teach you a lesson, but the fact that you have hung in there for a year and a half being a door greeter shows that you are not above doing the job you were given. I don't know what kind of promotional system Wal-Mart has, but I would keep applying for other
positions. If I didn't have something better in about six months I would speak to my supervisor about getting a different position. If no luck then take your ten years of experience and apply to another store or business. You have a lot to contribute and you should not be punished forever for one mistake. Good luck to you. Take care.
One word of advice, there are many people out here who would love to be a door greeter, and not have to collect unemployment compensation, so be thankful.
