I work for a local animal clinic and have been hearing a lot about this vaccine. Yes, I know...some of you are laughing, saying "Even I don't get the flu vaccine, why would I get my dog one?" Believe me, I understand, as I was of the same mindset until I did my research on the facts. In some areas of the US, this is becoming a significant issue.
Fact #1: 100% of dogs will get the flu if exposed
There is no way to stop your dog from getting the flu...just like humans. Your dog will get the flu, even if he doesn't show the symptoms.
Fact #2: Flu spreads mostly BEFORE symptoms appear
So even if there's no sneezing, runny nose, coughing, etc....your dog or those around you, may have the canine flu.
Fact #3: Flu does not kill, the bacteria does!
As with humans, it is not the flu itself that kills, but rather the secondary infection(s) that result from it, such as pneumonia (the #1 killer).
So why get the flu vaccine if it doesn't prevent the flu?
Because it will SAVE YOUR DOG'S LIFE!!!
While not all dogs will develop pneumonia, some will & that can be fatal. Even if you are lucky & able to treat it, your vet bill will be astronomical due to hospital care. Can you afford to take that risk???
Fact #4: The flu vaccine PREVENTS pneumonia!
Therefore, keeping your dog healthy & home with you, suffering from no more than a bad cold. Still may require a vet visit, but your cost will be minimal in comparision to treating pneumonia or some other serious disease.
PLEASE, PLEASE PROTECT YOUR DOG! TALK TO YOUR VET ABOUT THE CANINE FLU VACCINE!

Thank you for posting this. One of my three dogs contracted the flu, I assume at a dog show we had attended. Once one got it, the other two got it within a week. Not only were they horribly ill, it was quite expensive to treat, and none of us got any sleep for several days because they were so ill. All of my babies recovered, thank goodness, but I wish I had known about this before they got sick.

I'm happy that your pups made it through the treatment and recovered from the flu.
It is a relatively new disease that is becoming a major issue in some areas. My vet clinic wasn't even going to carry the vaccine until our owner went to an informational meeting on the subject one night. The next day he ordered 500 vaccines and began to educate us all.
When I heard that our neighboring county had 350 cases with a 6% mortality rate that shutdown their shelter for several days, I knew it was serious. When I heard that we could inadvertently take it home to our dogs, I was even more concerned. I knew that if I didn't happen to work for the vet clinic, I could easily be in your shoes, so felt I should do my best to educate everyone.
Thank you for sharing your story!
Health & happiness to you & your fur babies! :)
