Who works on your car?

Who does the mechanical work on your car? Some people have a relative or friend that works on their car and doesn't charge very much. Other people have to pay a little more than they would like, just because they need reliable transportation. Have you ever gotten rid of a car that you really liked just because it was too much money to fix? Was it cheaper or just make more sense to get a new car than to fix your old one?

Hi kykidd I will have to assume that with your name that you might be from Kentucky. Is that so? I was only wondering because I am too in KY. My husband does all of our mechanical work on the autos. Both of my sons do their own too. Which is just great considering that some of these mechanics try to take advantage of you. Great discussion.

Hi there RosePedal, what a unique screen name you have there. Yes, I am originally from the state of Kentucky. I grew up in Eastern Kentucky, in Johnson County. I wished I could go back more often, but usually only make it about once or twice a year. I think you're right about some mechanics just out there to make money off of people. I have even heard of some of them trying to say that things are wrong with your car that aren't, just so they can make an extra buck. Glad to hear that your husband does your mechanical work!

Thanks again for your response. I remember hearing of Grayson and Carter County, but I don't think that I have ever done much there, except maybe drive through. However, I do have a pretty good idea where it is at. Very close by! Thanks and have a great day here on myLot!

My husband and I work together to fix any mechanical work needed on our car and truck. It's cheaper, and it allows us bonding time. As far as getting rid of a vehicle because it was costing too much to take care of it, I did that once. It was my second car. The first had to be replaced when I totalled it. I traded the 2nd one in for a newer, nicer car, which eventually got replaced by a truck for my husband. But, it wasn't a car that I really liked. It was just one that I got to get me from point A to point B when I was in high school. The one that I traded it for was the one that I loved. But, that one wasn't that great after I became a mom. It was too small.

Thank you for your response in this discussion tonika. What a unique name! I am glad to hear that you and your husband can work on your own vehicles, and that you don't have to pay a mechanic. I am lucky that my boyfriend was raised on a farm and he can work on just about anything. That is, except computers. LOL I guess computers didn't seem that important back then. Thanks again, and have a great day here on myLot!

My husband was pretty much raised on a farm as well. We are both country "kids" who grew up with not much of anything. Living that way will teach anyone to take care of things themselves. Fortunately, we are able to teach our children all that we learned, so that they will someday be able to take care of themselves, as well. And as for my name...that's just what my husband calls me. He gave me the nickname years ago, and it kinda stuck. We figured out that it is a Romanian name. I kinda like it.

Hey that's pretty unique that he came up with the name, and then later you found that out. How funny! :) I try to be pretty handy myself, but I am better off just being the gopher (go for stuff). It seems like when I try to put something together I either get stuck in the middle, or something breaks. LOL

this is one thing i thought of keeping a motorcycle than a car, the expenses when time needs the car get to be fixed with something. with parts only, it has a great difference with spare parts of a motorcycle. with my motorcycle, if it's only a simple thing as brakes or electrical, i do it so i don't have to pay for technical services. but if the problem is with the engine itself, i have to bring it to someone who is an expert to engine trouble and maintenance.

Hi there neildc, and thank you for your response in this discussion. I am impressed that you can do that much work on your own. I have changed oil in vehicles that I have owned, by myself. But just about anything more than that seems a bit complicated. I once tried to change spark plugs, and they broke off right inside the socket. Then I had to call for help. Luckily, my neighbor was able to take care of it. LOL Thanks again, and have a great day here on myLot!

these days i dont think its ever cheaper to buy another unless you got credit and can pay monthly. but i used to have my middle son work on mine when i lived in ohio. hes a natural mechanic but unfortunatly i now live with the son that has other talents but not cars. in AZ, but then i no longer drive

Oh how true, cars are so expensive now a days. I remember when you used to be able to buy something that would run, and get you from point A to point B for $500 or so. Now, you would be lucky to buy a decent car for $5000. It's really sad that the prices have increased so drastically on new and used automobiles. Thank you so much for sharing your two cents here in this discussion. I hope you will have a lovely day!
