Public Option Healthcare - Just code for more welfare

The public option for health care is nothing more than a new way of giving more welfare. We can't afford the welfare we provide now. We have criminals who are not being prosecuted because police departments don't have the money to process DNA. We have police, teachers and other public service workers having to take time off without pay. Yet we continue to offer MORE welfare. Enough is enough is enough! You don't offer services you can't pay for. So what about the people on welfare they already get free health care - it's called Medicaid. So what's your opinion?

Than stop corporate welfare, farming wellfare, etc. Than let's see how it all works out. Many well off get justas much wellfare as the poor. You also answered your own question, te problem here is the people who work and really can not afford health care, they get the shaft.

The point is those who try, often get the shaft. This is not conducive to wanting to work hard. There is more than enough cash in the U.S. How bout capping executive pay and allowing those who work hard to get a fair share?

You won't get an answer to that one I am afraid. Most of these die hard, this is a capitalistic economy and should stay that way crowd, won't go as far as to say it should really be PURE capitalism... then they would actually have to pay a minimum wage that was more in tune to the cost of living, the companies they are working for would have to, and more than likely those companies would be taking a chunk of their high salaries to do it! and those same companies would have to scramble to get their fees, prices, ect down to a point that is in the means of the people!! and well, take away the medicaid, the medicare, ect from the healthcare system, if I heard it right off of fox news, you are taking away around 50% of their revenue. lots and lots of doctors, nurses, and other very well paid medical staff laid off, out of work, on unemployment!! not to mention all those nice salaries of the upper management in the insurance industry being placed in jeopardy!! Love to see it happen, I know it's not!! So whatcha say we at least cut to the chase of things here. You go into a store, and find one crying baby, and then you find another baby who is happily playing with his toy, or is happily sucking on his sucker or whatever, and you take that toy or whatever from the one and give it to the one that is crying... And well, count down the seconds that it takes before you get slapped by someone! This is what has been going on with the healthcare. They didn't like the group of people who didn't have it not having it, I mean, come on, got to be able to tell the world that they are taking care of the poor! This is America after all. So they take from us to give it to them. Their actions causes inflation to kick in, so, now the people who had the healthcare, no longer have it. So they take a little more from us, and pick and chose which of those that have lost it should have it and give it to them, with the same effect...more inflation...and one and one...just like taking candy from the baby as you pass by and popping into your child's mouth to quiet their cries! Only, I don't believe the spirit of the constitution gives the gov't the right to pick and chose who should live or who should die! Who should be sick, and who should be healed! They have no constitutional basis to place a child's health above someone elses!! It's unconstitutional, it's unjust, it's unfair.... none of which is in the spirit of what america is!! either be capitalist, or be socialist!! but quit claiming this mongrel that we have is a capitalistic economy and pretending to fight so hard to keep it that way, it isn't and that's not the reason you are fighting!

I do not understand why people dont understand this whole concept. First off the people that are going without the insurance are the ones that make too much for welfare but yet do not make enough to purchase the private insurance ( full price) This is for mainly the working class and the amounts of money you pay for it will depend on the income you bring in and the number of dependants that you have. They will not be getting the insurance for free they will be getting it for cheaper. Here in Mass we have mandatory insurance, at one point i was getting mine through my employer for 320 a month bcbs now that I am out of work due to an accident my family qualified for the state insurance which brought my payment down to 245.00 I pay for my insurance. Are you one of the lucky ones that get your insurance through your employer? If you are congrats. Are you one that receives medicaid? if you are then congrats. why should all the ones in the middle not be able to obtain either because it isnt offered at a discount price?

Having multiple family members in health care I have a different view of the "uninsured". They choose to be that way or they are already on Medicaid. All that aside - we can't afford it. Bottom line. We can't afford it and these folks are on their own because I shouldn't have to suffer for their shortcomings. I used to be the one in the middle. As I struggled to provide for my children through the years I really couldn't afford health care either - but we did without other things in order to make it work. I didn't take it at the expense of another family. The country cannot afford it.

Wlee, I'm coming into this discussion late but I took a second to check your profile and you're a little bit younger than I am so you raised your family back during a time when going to the doctor and filling a prescription or two was affordable. That is no longer the case. The cost of medical care and related expenses have skyrocketed multiple times faster than the rate of inflation and faster than wages have increased over the years. I also don't know where you get the idea that people...and especially families...who are uninsured "choose to be that way". You have to have a roof over your head, food, utilities, transportation to work so what make you think that there is enough left over at the end of the month to pay the outrageous prices private insurance companies want? Do you even know how bad most of these policies are? How high the deductables are before benefits kick in? It's nothing like employer provided coverage. As far as not being able to afford it. This country gives billions away to assist other countries while American citizens suffer and die needlessly. We spend millions on research that is only important to the researchers. I think it's time the working class citizens of this country became a priority.

I understand where you are coming from but I have a different view. I say citizens choose what they think is important. How many people I see without insurance yet wearing designer clothes and driving new cars. They could have chose to wear cheaper clothing, drive a nice used car and bought their health care coverage. People need to quit making themselves victims - quit holding their hands out and put them to work.

I just wanted o say....yes Ihave insurance. But the co pays, deductibles and such are so high. Thatmy family does not go to the doctors. What is the use of having insurance and paying for it if you dn't have the funds to use it. It is pretty bad when a family has to choose between putting food on the table or buying life saving medicine for Billy. But saying people choose.......I don't agree. I don't think most people really choose. Instead they do what they can to survive. I also don't think it is more welfare. I have no problem if the goverment would universal healthcare. Just let us that work pay a few moe taxes to cover it. It will work out. It does in ther countries. Hopefully the prescriptions would come down as well. Those are killers right now.

Are you more in favor of the corporate welfare being proposed for the insurance companies or are you simply opposed to any health care reform? Doing nothing will just keep our economy from growing and continue to add to the deficit. Pass a health care bill without a public option is, as I said above, just giving billions in corporate welfare to the greedy, corrupt insurance companies that are the cause of the problems we currently have. I'm all for cutting wasteful spending but if there's one thing I don't mind my tax dollars being "wasted" on, that's providing health care for all Americans. Nobody should die, lose their home or go bankrupt because they can't afford health care. I don't think this is even an economic issue but rather a MORAL one. Health care should be a RIGHT not a privilege. Annie

How do you hold $7-$8 per hour earners accountable for medical bills that equal two or three years worth of their wages? How do you refuse them service when their tax money is being used to provide healthcare to their neighbors? Heck, how do you justify the amount of tax money that is flowing into the healthcare in the form of research and developement when alot of the people footing the tab are being left out in the cold? na.....50% of healthcare's revenues are coming from the taxpayers if I heard fox news right. If affordable healthcare isn't a right we all should be enjoying, then, by all means, take away that 50% from the healthcare system, along with the ton of money that is being use to make the system better for those who are lucky enough to get decent healthcare! Let's see what we have after that one!

When I was a $3 - $6 per hour wage earner I still was accountable for my medical bills. So one gave my children free health care. I managed to pay their hospital bills, I paid their doctor bills, I fed them, I sheltered them all without welfare and all on minimum wage jobs. They can do it too. I don't ask anything of anyone that I haven't already done. How do you not hold them accountable? The same way they should be accountable for their light bill, food bill, rent. When are they going to be accountable for anything? I say all the folks who want to support them should do so - just don't expect me or my taxes to do so. Yes I had much rather help research and development and let the individual support themselves. Be responsible - pay your own way.

Inflation goes up and so does minimum wage - it all evens out. Things were less expensive - minimum wage was lower. Now things are more expensive so minimum wage is higher. I know people that do it everyday on minimum wage jogs. Most have at least one part time and one full time job. They are able to keep them because they work hard and don't lay out of work - so when pink slips are handed out they are last in line. They don't walk around with cell phones, new cars and designer clothes - they cut back in those areas in order to afford health insurance, car insurance, etc... and they don't go about holding their hands out wanting what someone else has worked for.

sorry wlee. don't want to get involved in what is clearly a heated national issue but think i should just point out that your country is one of the richest in the world and since plenty of far poorer countries do manage to provide decent welfare why is yours suddenly going to become bankrupt for looking afer its people?

ok wlee. lot of things to comment on there. the countries with the highest standard of living tend to be those with decent welfare systems. i.e. scandanavia etc. also they tend to be fairly welloff. communism is completely different - refer to wmraul's section for that. you have a rich country tlee (as do we) - make the most of it.

Here it is in a nutshell. I work very hard, I provide for my family. At times we have to give up things in order to afford health insurance. I see people everyday - literally - in the health care field. They come wearing Polo, Nike, and other designer clothes, they drive BMWs and Cadillacs, they have the best of everything - yet they are on welfare and have no health insurance. I want them to have clothes, food and even a car to get to work on - but my family should not do without for them to have the best and not even bother to work for it. That is what happens when a country provides too much welfare - we take away the need to work for a living. Our country is no longer rich - we are deeply in debt and in a serious recession borderline depression. We cannot afford to provide everyone with health care. The government has no right to take food off my table and give it to someone who won't even try. The current medicaid system is rife with fraud - until they get that right to government doesn't need to be in charge of any other health care plans.

JB we've being going bankrupt for years paying for the "poor" in our country. This isn't new it's just coming to it's natural conclusion - the country is broke. We aren't one of the richest in the world because we are too busy giving our money away to other countries (who hate us but love our money), people in our own country who are illegal and of course the legacy of FDR welfare and social security. One of the reason we are considered the richest countries is because we do things different, we expect our citizens to be a viable part of society not a drain on it. Perhaps the countries that are providing welfare are poor because everyone in the country is getting welfare. Welfare like communism is great on paper but human nature takes over and when a person is given everything they need they lose their drive to go out and get more. The welfare system enslaves people to the government eliminating the human drive to go out and achieve more.
