My new cat poops right beside the litter box.

Just like the title says, I just "inherited" a cat, whom I affectionately refer to as OCB (Obsessive Compulsive Binks). Binks has a tendency to miss the litter box half of the time. He has been an indoor cat before and I know he is trained and he has no problem urinating. I know he is probably stressed because of frequent changes lately (abandoned by previous owner a couple months ago, two different households in the last two weeks); what I don't understand is why he does it right beside.

I've had a few that get in right close to the edge, but their butts hang out the box - have you seen him actually out of the box or is it that way?
Could it be that the box smells like another cat? Maybe you need to add a box, some cats want to pee in one and poo in another...

I haven't actually seen him but he does pee rather close to the edge consistently. I will have to pick up another pan and give your second idea a try. Maybe if they are right next to each other if he misses one he will make the other. Thanks for the suggestions.

Maybe you could try changing the litter brand. It could be kitty does not like the particular brand you are using. I usually only have that problem when the box isnt clean enough. Some cats are very fincky about their potties and need to have clean litter at all times.

The reasons my cat misses the litter box are usually because he is either unwell and that is his way of letting me know or the litter needs changing. One of my kitties has been pooing outside of his box for months and I thought it was because he didn’t like the type of litter I was using but I have since discovered that he had inflammatory bowel disease and he will not use the box while he's sick. A while ago he had Urinary tract infection and...You guessed it, he was peeing outside the box!
