The age of discoveries and inventions is over according to some. All that are there to be discovered have been discovered and we are merely doing innovations of the discoveries. The laws of nature have been established. Man's basic tools to survive have been discovered, people are just improving on them.
Is it really over?

Well, I agree somewhat. No one has yet to make a working time machine, a matter transporter, etc. Those are about the only exceptions I can think of. Other than that, I agree with you. Most inventions are only improvements, like the 256 MB USB drives, which are now up to 100 GB and the computers, which are now faster and run better.

Dued to the theory of relativity, you can't make a working time machine. Dued to the law of conservation, you can't make a matter transporter. So before inventing those things, you have to invent a new theory in physics to put down both Eisntein and Newton, lol.

No. Invention is an invention. I mean how can one say that the age of invention is over when the concept of inventing means discovering new things? They just can't invent or discover new things. Man just say that because maybe we're up to the point that we reached the fullest capacity of our brain. But I believe in the future some will rise up with an extraordinary intelligence and will invent something. Have they discovered the cure for AIDS? Have they already invented a time machine? I don't think so. For me our world is still young in the field of science.

To add up to it. Some scientist or inventors did not think of something to invent at first. They just found it accidentally and just develop it. That's why it's called discovery. Fire would not be easily discovered if not for a certain incident. Another incident will lead to another discovery or invention. For me it's limitless. :)

I don't agree with you. We never can say that we've found everything in the world. The laws of nature discovered by humans are few comparing with the laws setting uo by the creator of this universe. If you check the record in some national agency of inventions, you'll see that there're very many inventions each year. And what's about Nobel prizes, do you think that they're just innovations or improvements? I think that the age of inventions is still going on, but perhaps it takes longer to verify and test a new theorical result before apply it in daily life.

A wise old preacher wrote: "What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which one can say, "Look! This is something new"? It was here already, long ago; it was here before our time." He wrote this in the book Ecclesiastes. That preacher was probably Solomon, who was known for his wisdom. What more can I add to his very wise words?

Learning never stops. I don´t know if some discoveries can be called inventions. Medicine is in it´s beginnings and so are sciences.
We don´t know what inventions the future will bring. Years ago, no one even thought about a computer, a fax, all these obvious things like emailing people or chatting with them through the distance. When I was little I had to write a letter, do to the post office and buty a stamp to put on the envelope. And afterwards WAIT.
I was 13 when the russians sent the Sputnik. How can we say what we will have in the future?

I'm afraid I don't agree to your point. In every period of history there were some people who claimed that everything had been already discovered and invented. But the history has proved that they were wrong. At present there are still many fields we don't understand a lot. For instance, we've researched the nature for centuries, but we still know little about ourselves. There are many deadly diseases we need to deal with. I guess in the next few decades we will make great progress in this field.

In 1886 the US Patent Office was nearly closed, because a congressman said "It now appears that everything practical has already been invented." 1886! Before the telephone, cars, zillions of electric and electronic gadgets etc!
We have seen ENORMOUS advances in technology in recent years, but I dare say we have only scratched the surface of what COULD be achieved. Yes, a lot of what we see is an improvement on existing things, but we also see new ideas and new ways of doing things.
Unfortunately not all inventions or discoveries are beneficial or even ethical, but there is still a huge area of needed technology in the field of medicine.

I agree, that we barely scratch the surface of what could be achieved. Even in the area of medicine, there are lots more to be discovered as many viruses continue to mutate. Aids alone has no clear and definitive solution as far as finding the proper cure.
great!

Not a chance. I was reading a month or so about how scientists discovered that scotch tape, when peeled off of itself in a vacuum, emits x-rays. They even took a picture of somebody's finger bone with it. Not only was this interesting, it also proves that there is always more to discover.
As for just doing innovations of discoveries, isn't that what all invention is? Electricity, for example, was simply an innovation on the discovery of lightning, or static shock or something. Every invention is simply building on other ideas, so I think it's completely inaccurate to say that inventions aren't really new inventions simply because they build on other inventions.

Not yet over, manong05, err, seryoso1. We have yet to wait for somebody to invent to grow malunggay (again!) out of empty lipstick cartridges, hahahaha. We have yet to invent machines that would prevent people to feel sad and lonely. We have yet to invent a machine that would not let us feel hungry. We have yet to invent a machine to freeze criminals as they do their wrongdoings. Seriously, science is in constant search for answers to the now incurable diseases like cancer and AIDs ... don't stop, please!

Yes, I believe it's not yet over. I personally would like to invent a keyboard that can be driven just by mental concentration. I don't like to type sitting down, sometimes my back is killing me. Yes, I might make a bonsai malunggay, I just don't know if it will be a useless discovery since you might need a magnifying glass and a tweezer to take the leaves from the stem.
Nice blooming avatar my friend.

According to me, age of inventions are not over. Till the middle of 19th century inventions are for the normal people, but now trhey are above the basic needs, some are actually not required to man. Now most of the inventions will lead to the destruction of the world.

I dont agree. We need robots to do all the chores, include nurse us back to health. We need something that tastes good, can be consumed as much as we want while we watch television, and still not add one calorie to our weight, and even reduce the flab round our waist, and of course, we need to know how to grow food in space for the evergrowing population, and how to inhabit other planets or moons since soon we may not have enough space to live here, and may be discover some wheat and rice plants that can give 3 crops in 3 months. Oh! I can think of so many things.

sure many things have been invented but many soon forget the key to invention in improvement. An invention is a new device, method or process developed from study and experimentation.
So lets take this further, The wheel was invented. The cart needed the wheel to be invented. The cart was not considered an upgrade to the wheel. Though based on your definition it would of been just a improvement to the wheel.
so is the age of invention over. Most likely not for noone truly knows what hasnt been invented until its invented.
Now if i can just invent something to take out the garbage for me.

No. There are still many things to find. Efficient energy sources, ways to truly fold the spaces so that we can travel around the stars.
And we still have not conquer cancer !
