definition of 'friend'

i find it difficult to consider all of the hundreds of people who i found or have found me on facebook actual 'friends.' a friend is someone to me who i share not only common interests, but common memorable experiences. simply knowing someone doesn't make them a friend. many of my 'friends' on facebook have hundreds of 'friends' on that website, but i know these people to be introverted shut-ins who rarely communicate with the outside world. how can they claim to have so many 'friends?' my question to everyone is, has facebook changed the definition of the word 'friend' in the world today? is 'friend' a blanket word to mean anything from 'cherished loved one,' to 'guy i met once,' to 'person i know through a friend's friend's friend?'
