Does Social Network are a kind of control on us?

Hi all mylotters, my question is : are social networks a way to control us and so a business for big companies and multinational? Millions of peoples insert their hobbies, lifestyles, tendences, interests and for companies is really important for the new objects they want to sell...they can check our favourites things and produce something with our ideas, tendences etc...they can control what's the most discussing thing, the most talking things and improve their products growing their business. what do you think about this? thanks a lot!
