How to make things more beautiful and pleasant?

Hope you all are doing fine. Sorry for my absence. I missed you all. Today, I am writing with a definitive purpose of making things beautiful for others and myself. I have been working as a secretary to a Senior Cardiologist in the country. My job profile is just like any of the secretaries. I take appointments, make the patients comfortable, file their docs, counsel them, help them expedite their whole process in the hospital. In addition, I do all secretarial job to my boss, which I simply love. I have a decent place to sit with a Flatron monitor, internet connection, hospital network system software and all that takes. However, I have been thinking to do things little differently for the patients and my boss. It should be something that the patients feel good about and the whole hospital experience should be a very pleasant one at the end of the day. I already keep flowers, candies, cookies, cuddles, magazines for the patients and children and make my utmost effort to be empathetic and make the people feel good. Still I would like you to suggest some really unique points that can really make the experience a really nice one. Thanks you and be fine.

Nothing would make that place a pleasant experience more than your poised presence Mimpi. But a sheaf of printed puzzles and crosswords with pencils given to the waiting patients will make their waiting time more interesting. And a piped in soft music would be very appropriate too. And a poster saying that the heart deceases are the easily curable ones in the modern times also ease them a lot. And the posters can be colorful with a taste.

Your boss is very fortunate to have someone like you assisting him. I say this for the reasons, that doing all that you do effectively and effeciently you are still looking at ways of making a difference. I can share from my experience what i've seen and what i have been involved in. Interaction with the patients, a smile, a hello, guidance on how to go about getting the formalities done, help with insurance matters goes a real long way in addition to what you already do in making thier visit a very pleasant one. Then there are things you could to improve the feel of the place. A theme simple subtle and yet getting the attention of those who come by. Culture, Sublime messages, motivating and even a bit of humour should be a good start. Posters, banners, pots and little bit of dry landscape should be a good idea. Diwali cards as a way of greeting now that the season is here, is one idea too which comes to mind.

Thanks a lot for this Alok. Yes, a little bit of humor adds so much and enlivens the ambience. People come to hospitals out of compulsion and I try to bring smiles. But, still I feel that isn't enough. I want to do more. Insurance thing is a real hassle and its not only cumbersome but also straining for the patients and their families. Even though, there is a good insurance department, people do come p to me for assistance and I must provide them with easy information. Diwali greetings is a great advice. I would try to sparkle my office with it surely. Happy Diwali to you and your family

A way of spreading the Diwali festive spirit could also be with sweets/dry fruits, and although i do understand that many who come to the hospital may not be able to consume them for health reasons, it will bring a smile on their face. And thanks for the wishes Mimpi, and here's wishing you and your family as well A Very Happy Diwali.

I already have a full box of chocolates here on my desk for the people. They are loving it. I just fear, about ending up with eating more than they do.

Hey there, My dad had his eye operated this August and this was the first time i had to visit a hospital frequently. I remember it had caused me a lot of inconvinience as its situated quite far from where i live. There was a lady doctor who was there just for the visitors and she helped me a lot. She was very sensible and very helpul in the time when I was so nervous. So i guess a helping hand and a sensible head is the most required in a crunch time like that of an operation. You know when in a hospital, people arent expecting much. What they really want is getting correct answers of their queries and ofcourse a good treatment. Cheers, Tutul

You made an important point there tutul. I really appreciate. hope your father is doing good now. I agree with what you said. We must guide the patients spot on and must not keep them on hold. This makes things worse for them.

You would be surprised to know that we have two paintings and one really good lord Ganesha photo in our office. One is an oil painting and another a framed Radha Krishna Madhubani painting. The Ganesha photo engraved in gold and solver is inside the chamber. You are right. They add so much to the whole ambiance. It's good to know that your father is doing good. Take care and wish you and your family a very happy Diwali.

Hey again, Well Daddy is doing good, thank u very much. I read your discussion once again and i think i missed a point here. My own family doctor has a very good clinic. And in the waiting room there is a painting of a beautiful village woman. As i have keen interest in paintings i always admire the painters work and also the beauty. You can certainly think about having a painting for more charm. And also in my office we have Lord Ganesha's idols and paintings. It is believed that Lord Ganesha brings prosperity and success to ones life, so definately u can try it too. Wish u and all my mylot friends a wonderful diwali! Cheers, Tutul

Wow, you must be one nice person. Well, 'mimpi' means dream, doesn't it ? =) What you have done is very appreciated by me. I hope you keep giving your best and give your dedication to whomever you work. But when the question 'how to make things more beautiful and pleasant' comes, it's hard-easy to answer. I think at the end, it is ourselves who make things happy, our perspective, and our point of view. And don't forget to smile, because the world will also smile with you. =)

That's so true. Real smiles can tie a ribbon of happiness all around the day. I am a sucker of it. lol.. I really appreciate your thoughts there and couldn't agree more. Its our perspective towards life, our approach, our sensitivity and urge that matter at the end of the day. I will try my best to be a good human first and that , I guess, would get reflected in my dispositions. Have a great day!

There are a lot of bosses that would be so grateful for a secretary like you. It is so wonderful to hear that you love your job; I think loving what you do is one of the biggest steps to happiness. The fact that you are so caring for the patients that come in makes you a real asset for the doctor you work for. I see someone suggested nice music. Scented candles perhaps? Uhmmm...You don’t want to set off the fire sprinklers! I think your smile and your kindness is all the patients need. Keep up the great work mimpi!

Love you Paula. I really want to smile more. May times I am so much stressed that I have to work hard on it. But it takes nothing to give a genuine smile. Thanks so much and scented candle is a good idea.

music for one will set the mood, although it should really vary. really pleasant pictures on the walls, especially those with humor, can neutralize negative thoughts! although the use of pictures and music should be done with taste. and lots of pillows for them to sit on (or grab on) while waiting!

Thanks, thanks and thanks. I used to play very soft meditative music on laptop but somehow I have been missing it lately. I must restart it. Making the waiting lunge comfortable is a great idea. And also the funny pictures. Thanks dear.

Hi dear! Before I could see this discussion of yours, I find that dear friends have already given some useful suggestions to you. I know that how caring and nice you are and you always wish that patients should feel comfortable, when they are on your desk, you keep handling them with skills and dexterity. I know that it is not an easy task to deal with various kind of patients and their attendants. Some are offensive and some are authoritative and some are are always in great hurry to speak and some other nice souls are there who would break the queue brazenly and would like that they be attended first. All I can say is that besides, all the other beautiful arrangements, which you have made to beautify the environment, you need to be thoroughly patient and you should master the art of bearing the tantrums of heart patients and their relatives. If somehow you lose your temper, while dealing with them it will also make you tense. Therefore, patience is the key to success. All the best. WISH YOU A VERY VERY HAPPY DIWALI!!

You have got it right deepak. Indeed at times it straining and inspite your good intention you are snapped at. But i just cannot afford to lose my temper as you have said. That would make things worse. Thankfully, I am a patient person but then i do have my days.

Yes, you are right, after all we are human beings and on any given day, our just fail to control our tempers. Nonetheless, even if we lose our temper on any given day, if we could control pitch our voice (not raising it too high), that may do the trick. Have a nice day!

You're great Mimpi! There is only a few people that thinks outside of the box like you. I know some who just want to do their job and get over with it. They won't even think to do other things for fear of adding extra works. If I was one of your clients, I would feel so good to go to the doctor with such a warm welcome. I don't know what can you add more. They have already gave you very great ideas. What about internet access, like a wifi zone, so if some of your patients have laptops, they can surf the net or attend to their work while waiting. How about vendo machines or ready available, hot drinks, like coffee, tea, milk. And also hand sanitizer, I think you can request free samples from med-reps. So your patient could feel good to have hand sanitizer available. And towels and tissues. And television, especially if you have popular shows at a certain time, and they will feel glad they haven't missed an episode. And how about giving away free medicines, samples, that will be good too. And do you have personalized booklets, like a diary of their progress but they get to bring it home. So you can also write friendly reminder there. Hope I have helped my friend. Keep up the good work!!!(^^,)

Hi dearie1 How have you been? Hope you are good and your studies are going fine. I miss you but understand your priorities. Be fine, always. You have mentioned some very important things as in sanitizers, especially, in this time of swine flu scare. I have mine kept there but I think I should provide the patients with this as well. Free samples of medicines is a great idea. I must talk to the MRs regarding this.

I am fine..I had to stop schooling for a while because I had an operation last July. I had an enlarged left ovary so they had to take it off. But I am fine now. Happily, it doesn't show any relevant hispatologic activity. So now, I am trying to get back to Mylotting, trying to catch up a bit. Lol. I am glad that you liked my ideas. And I am happy that it might help you. Keep up your good work, I am very proud to have such a good person like you as a friend. And also you can provide special treats when it is a patient's birthday. Take care Mimpi! Don't work too much too ha. (^^,)

Hi Mimpi Welcome back. sure u were being missed. How were ur vacations Well Mimpi, u r really a gem, that u r inviting suggestions to help patients so that they feel more comfortable and at ease (And detail you elaborated shows that u r already doing very well)Trust me its very BIG thing as normally people dont like to take input regarding to their jobs and life WELL DONE, Keep it up I believe that nice atmposphere, gentle and sincere smile, soft and sympathetic words, welcome and fresh face make the patient feel Well and they forget 20-25% of their pain. You are very right that little things dont add much in cost but feel patients/visitor comfortable and important. I am sure u must be doing it already, but some soft words, little encouragement , better guide of system and procedure, its all a patient or attendant wants Take care

Thanks Zass. I am fine, especially after the long holiday. However, I kind of missed my job. This is kind of unusual because I hardly take any leave. All the while I was thinking of my job and how could I make it more pleasant for the patients. I am still working on it. But I really appreciate what you have said Zass. Nothing like a genuine smile and comfort.

BTW, I did a lot of mylotting while away!! So, obviously, I was missing my seat, office, my boss. I had been a cause of a lot of inconvenience to my boss and the patients. But then, we have to switch off sometimes or may be just to let ourselves know how much we love our job. How have you been? How was Eid?
