Do you use UML diagram to start any software or web project

One of my colleague told me today that when he has to start any project he generally use UML diagrams and all the things become very easy.
other side i directly come on coding.
what about you. is it always practical to go for UML diagram. tell me your experience and suggestions.

UML is the wonderful language to represent the flow of action in a give model. While working on any software development projects, most of the project designers follows UML to assign flow structure of the operations between different modules.
It may not required if the scale of project is small, but its required if the project is big one.
I have done this in my academic project.

yes i agree with you that UML is a very wonderful language but as i have not worked in any big organization by the time. i don't know how they do their analysis and design.
tell me what type of project can be developed with the help of UML and how to start with this

It is good idea to understand basic things from UML diagram bu i had never used this diagram.
