What actually a blog is?

we have listened this word many time.
i have gone through many blogs even. i just come to know, that is the place where people share their views. but still i am confused about that why people are addicted of blogging. i am a IT professional , i have my website but dont have any blog.
tell me why people are addicted of blogging and what it is actually

In my understanding blog is a kind of diary where you can write everything what is in your mind and share it to other people. I don't know where the words coming from but I'm sure this is about life inside the internet world...Have anice day!
