I am just confused with some rituals in weddings, because back in the province couple who are getting married never mind about the wedding cake. In fact when I was growing up there, I never saw any wedding cake in the reception of the newly weds. So my question, is wedding cake necessary or not in a wedding?what does it symbolized?

I don't think that a wedding cake is necessary during a wedding ceremony and reception. I do, however think that it is something that is symbolic in the new life that you are starting. Here in the United States, when making the first cut into the wedding cake the bride and the groom do it together. For me that symbolizes unity. That from that point on in your life you will be doing things together, no matter how small they may be.

Thanks for the response. Wedding in the Philippines also practiced having wedding cake in the ceremony, although it became more of a fashion than a significant part of the ceremony.

Wedding cake is important although right now some people only use dummy on the ceremony, it symbolized a unity of two heart that will be together in their life from now and so on(Usually the couple cut the wedding cake together from top to the bottom) :)

Thanks for your response. I observed also that the newly weds cut the wedding cake at the bottom with both their hands entwined.

I had no idea what that wedding cake symbolize anything. I guess most couples would do that since someone started doing it. And it seems cool, and please most of the guests. I won't mind to have a wedding cake or not having one, since a wedding simply a ceremony, not gonna bother my wife's and my life together. So, it really depends on whether my future would want a cake or not.

It is a part of the conventional ceremony as it symbolizes the first task that the couple do together in public. If you notice they have to slice the cake together. However, nowadays, as wedding cakes become more commercialized and costly, there are other variations that the bride and groom can choose from. Instead of having layers of fondat cake, they can choose to have just 1 layer to be used for the ceremonial slicing of the cake, and then have enough cupcakes for the guests. I find that cuter, more convenient to distribute to the guests, and more economical, too.
