Recipe or Feel?

Cooking - There is an old saying that goes: A good chef never uses a recipe, do you believe this?

I just finished having a conversation with a male friend of mine and during the conversation we started talking about cooking. He was mentioning some of the different reasons that each of the sexes cook. Among the reasons he thought was that many times a women will cook because she is the main chef of the family and it is just something she does almost every day whereas many times a man is not the main chef of the household and does it for different reasons. I thought it was a good point that he made and I have to say that I agree with him. But as the conversation went on he was mentioning that he thought probably everyone could cook if they would read a recipe and understand it before they begin cooking the meal and of course there is also an element of a "feel" for cooking. At that point I mentioned to him that I could not cook with a recipe because every time that I do I mess up the meal entirely! While it is true that I may glance through books once in a while to get an idea of something new to cook, you will never see me put the recipe on the kitchen sink and begin following it! How about you? When you cook do you use a recipe as a general rule or are you like me and just go in the kitchen and start putting things together that you feel should go together and turn out a meal?

Ah ha! I know your secret! You, my friend, can not follow directions! You cook the way you cook because you prefer to do things your own way. To answer the question I only need a recipe for something I don't know how to make.

Hi Gel, As a female I find cooking the daily meal a chore but do enjoy baking cakes etc but in all the cooking I never follow a recipe book, but they are in my cupboard as an ida gide or to check sometimes the quantities needed if cake making. In fact most of my meals are mish mashs of what is in the cupboard. Huggles Ellie :)

Hi Ellie! Yes I do remember you telling me before that cooking a regular meal is not really your forte! But that's OK! Not everyone was meant to be a chef...and your baking skills are probably better than mine as I do not bake mush because Hubby and I are not really big sweets eaters so why bake a cake when it won't be eaten? By the way, sometimes I make those mish mash meals also, find some things in the cupboard that I am tired of looking at and make a mish mash meal out of it. When I tell Hubby that dinner is going to be: "A little bit of this and a little bit of that" Then he knows enough...it's mish mash night! Thanks a lot for your response and have a great week-end!

hi greeneyedlady when I had my own apartment I loved to just make up my own recipes and feel my way through various dishes as I was really cooking only for my self as my son had weird hours and often ate at work, or ate out. I had a lot of fun just experimenting and I seldom goofed up either.

Hi Hatley! My how quick you are today I just posted this! Yes I think that is probably why I can't cook with a recipe because I love experimenting also! Every time I see a recipe I always think...oh I can do something better than that!! And it's amazing how when you do it long enough it just comes to you and like you, You seldom goof up!! Thanks a lot for your response!
