What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?

Whenever someone asks me what I want to be when I grow up, my answer is to become a teacher without any hesitation. But in fact, my dream is to be a free-lancer, which sounds so irrational and incomprehensible.
Most of us were brought up to study hard, get good goals, choose a practical college major, and strive for an "ideal" job, such a teacher. But is it your real dream? I don't think so. Sometimes, we can't follow our dream during childhood for some materialistic reasons.
So, What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?

When I grow up I want to be very very old and in extremely good health, mobility, and intellect... you know, sound of mind and body and all that! Well, my dream was to be a teacher and I did that, so now my dream is to continue being retired, lol. For a LONG time!

You are so lucky for your childhood dream came true at last. But there are a lot of people who have to change their dreams for the reality.

Well, you are right to say "at last" because it took a very long time, and as you say I had to do other things for what seemed like forever, but I kept my goal and tried to be as cheerful as possible and to do the best job I could while working at lesser things. But seriously, I NEVER plan to grow up :-)

Well, I am "grown up" or most people would say I am. I still don't know what I want to do as a career. Right now, I teach, but five years from now, I can't see myself doing the same thing. I don't even know what my real dream is. Maybe be a professional writer.

Hi danrunfast: don't worry, just keep working. The position you are now doesn't mean that you'll finish in the same point for the rest of your life. We're young and even if we're not, we're alive, we have hope.

When i was a small girl, and if anybody asks me what I wanted to become when i grow up, immediately without any hesitation, i will tell that I wanted to become a Doctor and even if anybody asks me my name, simply i will tell them my name prefixing the title Dr. and suffixing the degree MBBS and people will laugh affectionately and pat on my shoulder and in this way I became the pet of all my neibours who loves me so much because that was a very tender age and pre schooling times and does not know the intensity of my words. Now, after growing into an adult, my dream has remained as a dream only and i became a housewife instead of a Doctor

I'm now learning to drum. I really want to play in a band or teaching drum in music schools.
I think it's great to make your hobby your job.

I remember our teacher asking this when I was still in the primary level. She asked us to stand in front of the classroom and tell everybody what we wanted to be when we grow up. I remember being worried about what to tell in front of the class because honestly, that I had no idea what I really want to be. I haven't really thought of it since I was still young that time. So...I was left with no choice but to just get in the flow of trend. Most of them said Doctor...so I decided to say the same thing without me knowing what I'm really talking about. .

Working for yourself is the best thing you can do! You have independence, can make as much as you choose to and have control over your hours. It's not always stress-free, though, as you have to worry about paying taxes and attracting work. But most people will say that it's much better than working for someone else. Keep dreaming and working to make it come true!
Sometimes our dreams come true in the most surprising ways. I always wanted to be a writer but never did and became a wife and mother. After that fell apart I needed to make some money and here I am, writing articles for the internet! It's not what I had envisioned, I'm not writing million dollar novels, but my dream has come true to some extent.

I am 54 years old and I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. I don't remember ever having a career goal or "dream" when I was young. My mother mostly drilled into my head that what was important for girls was to grow up, get married, get a nice home with a white picket fence and have kids. I have had many jobs during the course of my life but for most of my younger years I just wandered aimlessly waiting for the husband, house and kid scenerio to happen. When it did happen, the first marriage didn't last and the house that I got with the second husband had a picket fence but I took it down because I hated it. The kid was and always will be the joy of my life though. Now that I am older, I do have a yearning to work from home but I don't feel that it will ever be obtainable for me because I just can't seem to feel the necessary passion in anything to make it work.

I'm about to start going to school to be a nurse. First, I want to get my RN. Then I want to become a traveling nurse. Something I've always wanted to do is travel the world, and being a traveling nurse would be a way to do that, and also have a job that pays extremely well.

I live in a small town and for some reason alot of people want me to make something amazing out of my life. Most poeple want me to be a lawyer, truthfully i want to work on a horse farm. Most people dont think that there is a career or good job working on a farm. I work at a farm on weekends and make $100 a day. I only work 3 days a week and in a month i in total make $1200 that pays for the bills.how ever my family still doesnt think this is a good career personally i really dont want to go to college or university.

I wanted to be a nurse first then I saw someone who was severely injured. Seeing all that blood, I change my mind real fast. My next choice was teaching. I did major in Accounting, but I change recently to substitute teaching. I am still toying with the teaching job.

Hi getbrowser,
When I was a kid, I always dreamt of becoming a lawyer aiming to defend the battle of the poor and the oppressed ones. Well, that was during the Marcos regime when everybody was claimoring for democracy. And so in college I applied for a scholarship in the University of the Philippines, fortunately I got it and enrolled in AB Social Sciences specializing Political Science in preparation for my Law studies in the next four years. To sum it all, I graduated the 4 year course and landed a job with the plan of going back to school when and only if financially capacable. Unfortunately, the job was so time demanding that I set aside my dream thinking that I'm still young that anytime I can pursue to Law school. However, things comes out to be different when you are earning well and professionally rewarded. I was promoted to a higher post, as higher responsibility comes with it I forgot the ambition of "becoming a lawyer". Given the chance, I landed to be working abroad with my husband and have chosen the career of motherhood. Well, one thing I have proved in life; you may not have reached your dream but still you can be an achiever in your chosen field if you "aim high and hit the mark". Good Day!
