Do you keep a computer in front of you when studying? do you use it to look up words or concepts on the internet? and now ladies and gentlemen the question you didn't want to read: do you stay focused on your books or do you sometimes post on forums like MyLot, update your status on Facebook and check your mail?
Since I started University I have been using the internet a lot, it really helps me to check things I don't know, to focus more on topic I need to study in depth ... but it also attracts me to forums and social networks, all the kind of things that make you lose a lot of time. I especially waste a lot of time checking Facebook and answering to discussions on MyLot (I shouldn't have come back!! lol)
I always start studying and leave my PC off, telling myself "come on you can do it, you did it for ages without a connection" and then I eventually turn it on with an excuse like "this term sounds difficult, let's google it up" eheh
Does the same thing happens to other people as well? I think it can also fit people that work in places like offices, I guess that's why some bosses want sites like Facebook to be blocked ;)

There was no internet during my time at the university. Fortunately or unfortunately, it has practical uses. Researching would have been easier for certain subjects but on the other hand, it keeps one away from studying. Who would bother to study when there are other fun things to do online? Now, I use the internet to look up answers for my kids' homework or to help explain things to her. Yesterday, she asked me what a clause in a sentence means. I know what it is but cannot explain it correctly. So, I looked for a simple definition and example. She actually uses the internet a lot. She even finds quizzes on science (her favorite subject) to test her knowledge. Unfortunately, she is more often on the social networking website than anything else.

The internet can be helpful for kids If parents keep their searches monitored and make sure they visit helpful resources, like the ones dedicated to quizzes and science, like you said. I'm studying to become a teacher at primary school and we did some researches on e-learning. I browsed a tons of websites created by teacher and I admire them for the effort they made to also create small applications that can help kids to learn subjects like math for instance. Most of them were made to be funny following the "learning while enjoying yourself" practice, which seem to work best :)

I find myself getting distracted and posting on forums a lot when I should be studying... Like right now, for instance. Somehow, though, I always manage to get everything done, so I guess it isn't too bad. The internet can be very helpful in studying, and the time it cuts off *almost* makes up for the time I waste getting distracted.
And I can see why bosses would want Facebook to be blocked. I can also see why workers wouldn't want it to be blocked. Someone has to lose...

I think Facebook could be helpful for workers, the simple fact of answering a comment from time to time can help reduce stress or at least that's what I feel when studying so I guess it can be applied to workers as well. Of course bosses have to intervene If they see a fall in their services.

when I was still in college I reraly use internet while reviewing or somthing. I spend much time on the net if I need a lot of research for projects and assignments.
Now that I am working, I mostly rely on the net for something I can use, one is the online dictionary and thesaurus. But if ineternet isn't available, I rely on the computer for spelling check (US english spelling) is dictionary isn't available as well.

Till my college studies I didnt find computer help while I am in studies. But after that my most of learning and studies are went with computer assistance only. By reading books and all I used to update my knowledge and learned lot of things every time. Its being very wonderful while referring internet for different angles of explanations about one topic.
I do this regularly, but some time it may not happen because of other activities like checking mail and online messaging. Any way its also part of communication to update the status.

Yes, like you said I find it very useful especially when studying in order to deepen your knowledge of a given topic. Too bad teachers always say it's filled with wrong informations and that even Wikipedia shouldn't be taken seriously, or at least that's what our teachers told us.

I *always* keep my computer on. It's really bad because I'm a little addicted to Facebook and other internet sites...I just feel a little lost and empty when it's not on, I guess. If I really want to knuckle down and study, I usually take me and my books to the library and study away from the computer. But if I'm in my room, my computer has to be on. I can't just sit next to it with it closed and off. xP
Yes...I have a little bit of a problem. :D

ahaha we're alike, I'm kind of addicted therefore I just can't focus on my books without first checking my mail, updating my Facebook status, bother a couple of cyber friends and of course answer new questions on MyLot ahah when I see it switched off I'm like "okay I'll switch it on butt it's going to sit there and be helpful only for searching informations". Too bad I never keep the promises I made to myself :|
