How did you get into the photography field

My girlfriend has been trying to figure out what she wants to do career wise. She went to school at the art institute for graphic design. She likes design but can't see herself at a desk her whole life,but, she loves photography. It is all she talks about when we talk about her future. I also think she is very very good at it for having no formal training. What is the best way to get her started in a career other than portrait studios(she has worked at 2)?
