For a PC software video player i usually use VLC. I find that plays everything I can ever need it too. Even realplayer and quicktime files.
I've not tried KMplayer though, is that good?

Do you mean a standalone DVD player that's not part of your computer?
DVD players can often be updated by going to their manufacturer's website and looking for a firmware update or software update, you can then usually burn these to a CD and update it that way. Not all DVD players can do this however and many do not support all types of files if you're trying to play something like an AVI file.
Quite often though if it does not play the file type already there's a good chance it may not even after updating it. Although it's worth a try.
If, however, something goes wrong when trying to update some hardware then it can create problems and can even break the player so read any of the companies warnings about updating before doing so.
I hope this information is helpful. Good luck updating!
