We call it the sprint to the finish: ride as hard and as fast as we can until we reach our driveway, racing to see who could get there first.We pulled up, slammed on our brakes and hopped off our bikes. A neighbor was walking by and said, “How did you do that?”“I just put on my brakes,” I told him. No, he said, he meant how could we just stop like that without cooling down?

Hello braver.
I think your neighbour asked you the right.It is very very necessary to cool down before you totally stop your days excersice, you cannot at all stop in between your cycling or treadmill and say that you are done for the day, its a wrong way of excersice.
Before you start6 and as you end your hard excersices it is very necessary that you cool down as your nerves are stressed out during your hard twists.

As I understand it, not allowing time to cool down after exercise can lead to a build up of toxins in our muscles... but I'm no expert. I always find that I ache less if I at least do a few minutes of stretching after exercising. (Of course, being much older, I am more likely to ache than you are!)

hi braver^^;;
i can't actually explain it but i know cooling down is as important as warming up.
this helps relax our strained muscles during the activity. i heard from our seniors in our team that it also avoids varicose veins. When i we are having training in my sports, our coach usually order us to do the cooling down by another set of stretching different from the warm-up stretches.

Every coach and PE teacher says it is very important, since changing the rate your heart is beating too fast is not good for our organism. But I never have a problem not doing so (yet, I'm rower wanna be) but I'm aware I'll have problem later.
I know, I should consider start listening to my coach.
