The Philippines is a third world country that'a fact. Have you ever wondered why? considering our rich natural resources, a god given good natured attitude, a lot of manpower to spare, capable of going toe to toe against the native English speaking countries etc. etc. The list is endless, so you ask, What is lacking? having a colonial mentality? come on! it's been more than a hundred years since we were liberated. Personally I think our problem is that we were, or at least majority are born and raised by their parents to be servants! thats our problem. It's very common for parents to ask their children, "'nak, study well so when you graduate you can look for a job..." it's just like saying study well so when you graduate, you'll end up a good a servant. Have you ever wondered why the Chinese are the once who succeed in the Philippines? It's because they were raised to become businessmen. To them, "Nak, study well so when you graduate you'll manage our business." Is that not what we are suppose to do with our children? Who among you here got rich with your 9-5 job? I bet no one. It's more likely that of a rat race, you'll race for the 15th and you'll race again for the 30th. And the cycle continues. What do you think?

I think most of us are just happy go lucky people. We are content on what we have even just a little. Just to be able to meet our needs then it's fine with us. We don't really think of the future that comes on us. But we wonder why when we are outside of our country we are a very hard working and make most of anything and when we are back again to our native land that the time we make use of our money and do business. I think in here we don't know what we have and don't make use of it. And also money is we what we don't have with in the first place. And besides we are afraid to put a business fearing of might not work at all. But overall we are contented on what we have and least we are happy unlike having those a lot money and successful in their business but not happy and have a lot of complicated problems.

You just don't admire those people who are happy and leave everything to god in spite of nothing in there in hands than those you have everything but not happy. Where would wanna be?

I don't think you'll be happy if you're hungry. If you are then your living a lie.

Filipinos are just used to poverty that they no longer care. They just feel contented with what they have and leave everything to god and pray they win the lottery. Tsk! tsk!

I think you have read Rich Dad Poor Dad. lol. Anyway, I do agree with you but I guess a lot of Filipinos are just afraid of failure. That is basically it. Their fear is what keeps hindering them towards success. A lot of Filipinos I know wants to have their own business but they give a lot of excuses when starting it. The most common excuse I hear is that only 10% of businesses actually succeed and they are afraid that they will not be included in the 10%.

No I haven't read the book, but it sure sounds interesting, Please send me a link if there's a free copy on line LOL. Personally, I think the 10% success rate was just made up by businessmen who are afraid of competition. Cheers!

Yes I agree to you that Chinese is like that they are more business minded and they past it on to there children. Unlike we don't want to take a risk and putting up a business we are satisfied on our employment. Who among of us getting rich by our salaries. Only the employers benefited from us. I'm also thinking of owning my small business next year because it is hard for me to find employment because of my health condition.

For me, if you combined, it will be the best. It's not bad to have a work or to be an employee, but having a sideline or extra income or being engage in a business is really an advantage. I can say that the risk in a business is big, not like being an employee, that's why most people prefer to be an employee. Aside from that, most people can't afford the capital for a business. So for me, what should we do is, especially for those who have no budget for capital, be an employee first, when you already earned enough, you can now open a business. You can do both, business as a sideline. Then when your business became successful, then that will be the time that you will leave your work and focus on your business. Have a nice day! Happy myLotting!

That's the ideal thing to do. It's like having business with pleasure. Best of both worlds. Now if you think you are already capable tackling the world of business then you have to go for it after all that's where you make your fortune. Cheers!

Hi ybong007! " Wages can make a living while Profit can make a fortune " I have read this qoute in the book of Bo Sanchez which is the 8 secrets of how to become truly rich. He stated there that we Filipinos are trained to be a good employee and not employer. Actually there's nothing wrong with that if we just want to live a simple life, but now since we are on economic crisis, we cannot really rely on the companies that we are employed. What if the companies will shutdown? then how are we going to cope with that. And yeah your right thats the difference between the Filipinos and chinese. Chinese children, at an early age are being exposed in business and being taught and train on how to become a good businessmen. I think we are not really that poor if somehow we are trained and have knowledge about building a business.

Yes, indeed. It's about time we change our mindset from being good servants to entrepreneurs. And we have to start somewhere, and now is the right time. We Filipinos are naturally gifted with "pakikisama", in business we need "pakikisama" to succeed. Let's not just settle for less. Cheers!

Yes, I definitely agree with you. Its because we didn't seize what we have. If God favored philippines for having great resources in nature then he has his reason. I believe that we are destined to manage this resources.. to work on it and with this It will brings out the best on us and eventually get rich by doing what we are born to do. We always strive to be someone else thingking that maybe we could also get what we see on them. Were not risk taker as the no.1 rule to be a businessman. to be brave enough to be original and try something new until it succeed.

True. If the saying "Pinganaganak na may gintong kutsara sa bibig" (sorry, don't know what is the equivalent of that saying in english LOL) is true, that's us. Some would say Filipinos are afraid of risks, afraid of failure. failure... failure...haven't we failed already? And for so long?

Filipinos are very competent individuals but they do not know how to manage their money well. Most of us doesn't really appreciate what we have here in our country, we have a mindset that makes us envious of the west that we try to imitate others lifestyle and culture. Most of us lacks love for our country and for fellow Filipinos. We tend to compete within ourselves and betray one another. Yes, we are hardworking and that's a big plus for. Unfortunately we are not united and some think of only themselves. Even those people in the government, they don't care how Filipinos live their lives just as long they do their job and earn money and popularity. What I stated may not be true in all cases but that's just the harsh reality that we turn a blind eye to. It's good to have your own business but it's more risky than having to work from 9-5 everyday. In the end it all boils than to who is better in saving money and who is not.

Very good point. You could earn big bucks but if you don't know how to manage it, you'll just end in the rat race. Thanks for sharing!

People who have a permanent 9-5 jobs are after fix incomes, security of tenure and benefits and lesser risks even though the salary is low. In employments, there are no surprises, income wise, one is looking for a fixed amount come payday. They have already figured out, how much will go for the rent, the bills, installment payments etc. And losing their jobs is catastrophic. Business, on the other hand, offers lots or potentials to earn but not totally risk-free. The fear of not having a fixed and sure income is scary. What if? is a question that bothers many people to venture on a business enterprise. People who are successful are people who are willing to take the risks head on. They don't wait for things to happen, they make things happen. enjoy!

Yes we are after fixed income, security of tenure etc. etc. Sure losing a job is a scary thought. But even big companies are not secured in the global economy. Who would have thought that Lehman bros who existed for more than a hundred years would fall? There are several examples than I can think of. I not saying that everyone should leave their 9-5 job and venture into business, it's more of broadening their horizons. Majority of us, once we find a job is already contented and just work and work an look forward to our retirement. What if you lose job? good thing if your better half is also well secured in her job but what if she isn't? Well, that thought scares me.

I actually prefer having a business over a job.I would like to test the waters first by starting an online buy-and-sell store.though it would be comforting to have a monthly money resource for my daily expenses,I believe nobody will get rich if they stay as employees.also,it feels good if you have a business that give you money for your savings AND you next business plans.sometimes,I wonder, these managers with lots of money, they can save for capitals to start their own business or invest in stocks, yet they don't do it.if I were them I would have done that.

Hi, ybong, thank you for your meaningful topic. As you said, many of us are just not content to have a 9-5 job, and maybe everyone of us is dreaming to be a boss and have large business. We are afraid to losing what we have so we can't get started to create a new field of ourselves. So i think courage is the most important thing to be success. I am also a common chinese, but in China, and i still haven't my own business. I think if you want to start a business, right now, never afraid of any losing, and then you'll be success. And the amount of courage decides if you can get into the 10%.

hi ybong^^;; i'm really wondering why we can't get even to the world's economy despite of the advantages your mentioned and are very competitive I know what u mean, i used to work in companies and the latest one i had give salaries every Fridays and it's like we are just waiting for Thursdays because the next day will be the salary day and we can go out for a Friday night, shop on Saturdays, eat out on Sundays and poor again on Mondays, waiting on Tuesdays and Wednesdays... Now, i don't run a business but work on my own at home and i can say i earn more since i don't share my commissions to anyone but myself unlike if you have bosses. I had saved a lot now because i don't spend for fares and food outside and no need to treat my co-workers every Friday. ah one complaint i usually hear from foreigners which is true is that we always postponed what we can finish today and we work so slow. Try to go to government offices and the waiting time is terrible. Some are just watching TV while on the office instead of working....can u imagine that? we are too relaxed and don't care if we delay something or not. Let's say applying for a passport, i don't get it why we need to wait for a month while other countries can do it a week...see the difference?
