I have to be honest. I don't know what "saal mubarak" means. I think his intent is on creating world peace. Why? Do you feel it is a bad thing? Elaborate because I really don't know. from what you wrote above, it appears to be a friendly, harmless gesture.

Saal Mubarak is a urdu way of wishing happy new year. Indians in US are doubted as terrorists especially indian muslims. So instead of saying saal mubarak i feel Barack Obama should have translated it as " Naye Saal Ki Shubhkaamnaye " which means happy new year in hindi.

I think you are grasping at straws, it is obvious what he meant. He meant it in a positive way. That is all that matters.
