Okay first off, I'm NOT, as many of you know, a Christian and havent been in a very long time..BUT that said, I have issues with this...Apparently, on Halloween night the Amazing Grace Baptist Church will be burning bibles (any NON King James version) music and other books by Christian authors, such as Billy Graham and Rick Warren...I think this is just wrong...I really do..Like I said I'm not a Christian by any means HOWEVER I have a HUGE issue with book burnings...if the Pastor doenst care for a specific bible version or type of book or music thats fine..DONT HAVE IT AROUND OR IN YOUR CHURCH..but to burn them is just sad and pathetic IMO...

Someone I know used to say being baptist is one step under Catholics, sometimes it makes me wonder if that's good or bad. Personally I prefer KJV over some of the new translations but I wouldn't go out of my way to burn them. In fact I see it as pretty negative thing, these books might have helped someone in their moment of need. I guess if you look for evil in something than you are going to find it and if you look for the good than you can find that also, it seems like they are looking for the bad, maybe its more of a reflection of self than outer actions.

What sort of message is this sending to the congregation? And why haven't they fired this guy? Yes, they can fire him. Of course they could be like Fred Phelps brainwashed congregation and go along with whatever he says.
This is why religion is a bad thing. Not Christianity, but religion. I swear some are so stuck into their religion if the pastor told them to worship dog turds, they would without question.

LOL yea he's a REAL piece of work isnt he?!?! that "man" just trips me out!!
and yes the pastor could very easily be fired should the congregation feel it's needed.

I think there are some people who don't like independent thinkers. I think this pastor is making a mistake, but I don't know that he's any worse than the college professor who gives a failing grade when the student's opinion doesn't match his own. Control comes from a lot of different places and people.

This ... just disgusts me... and it's starting to sound more like a dictatorship or cult than a church, unfortunately.
I used to live in a town with a preacher who was similar in these matters. The preacher was also a substitute teacher at my high school. I was devout and a Christian at the time, and I remember discussing with my classmate (who attended his church) about various other denominations and religions such as Catholicism and Mormon. A couple of days later, my classmate slipped me some books and reading materials that he had provided her on my behalf. I can clearly remember one of the titles being "The Cult of Mormon". That in itself ticked me off, as I wanted facts to draw my own opinion from, not bias opinion force fed to me.
What took the cake with him was when he subbed for my art class. Earlier in the year, we had all been told to pick a piece of (famous) artwork from this book we were given, draw it out, and paint it on the art room window. I can't remember the name of the piece or the original artist, but it there's one of a cattle skull in the desert, as well as one with a man lying on his back wearing a multi colored robe and looking up at the night sky. The teacher/preacher huffed all day about how the works of art were satanic and a mockery of the bible, stating that it was supposed to be Joseph looking at the sky and the skull was an homage to satan.
*eyeroll*
I can't imagine the other things that he thought, said, and did outside of the classroom...
I just have a SERIOUS issue with those who can't at least first try to work out issues constructively before damning everyone.

I'm not sure I see it as "wrong" persay, but it is rather... pointless. What value is gained from burning books, regardless?
Could they not have sold the Bibles, even at a steep discount, and used the money for some useful purpose?
Some churches are rather odd.

I totally agree with you. I'm not Iraqi, but I would take issue with someone burning an Iraqi flag, or any other flag for that matter, of nations I am related to and nations I am not related to. I have a hard time with burnings of flags, books, and any other opinion or symbol of freedom of thought.

This is a clear case of misplaced enthusiasm and extreme religious fanaticism. I share your convictions about books and what the pastor did was not correct. If indeed he was strongly against other translations or christian books, he could have disposed of them in a more civilized manner either by donating them to public libraries or other churches or just simply instruct his congregation not to bring them to churches. This is simply a clear display of religious fanaticism which is not reflective of the genuine Christianity.
enjoy life!

I think its' just plain wrong. Those books could be of benefit to someone. Not everyone can understand the King James Version, and is why there are others that are similiar, and made for easier reading. I understand that some of the Bibles are not on key as they should be, but there are good Bibles that could be used by people that cannot afford a bible. I just think the minister has gone off his bean.

When King James wrote his translation of the bible to english, everybody and their brother had translations. Just how many bibles were there??? More than we can count. After King James wrote his translation, he had a witch hunt to collect all the other versions. Maybe they are just celebrating that bible burning. Kinda seems like the middle ages again. Doesn't it??? Let the rest of us not give up our freedoms so easy. God gives us all freedom in all our choices. Shouldn't we be big enough to do the same??

Hey look at the revenue that is being generated by the burning. They have to go out and buy the books and CD's their burning.. He's really just stimulating the economy ;)

I'm a Christian and I just think that's too weird. I love the King James version for its literary merit, but I personally use either a New King James version or an NIV (easier to understand). That's the kind of activity that's suspiciously fanatical and fanaticism, no matter the form or object, is always unhealthy. What are they gonna do next? Hunt down witches?

Sad to hear this is happening. Why did that Pastor think of such nonsense when in fact, it is still the Bible that he is burning. Who can understand other languages if KJV was the only Bible he allows his members. What does he think about other Bibles translated in different tongues?
About music and other books by different authors, well it is really sad to hear that if he is not agreeing with those, then better leave it alone and tell his members not to buy nor read or listen, but to burn, well it is something that he is against and he does not respect them too which is why most people over abused the word Christianity and Religion are all the same when in fact, it will never be because of people's mentality.
If you don't agree with what others have in mind, then respect them. God gave us free will to choose and we cannot force anyone about it less we become something like a dictator.

I can not understand why the Pastor of Church would be burning bibles. It is not right to burn any version of the bible just because they do not agree with what is written in it. They do not have to believe what is written and do not need to have any of the King James version at the church. If he does not like the music than just do not play it in his church.

I don't believe that church has Christian Members...true christians would not act in that manner...that displays hatred for other people that you don't agree with.
Christians would accept the differences with other people, and love them for who they are, even though they disagree with their beliefs.

I was watching something a couple of days ago which included a meeting with the Crown Prince of Serbia whose family had been in exile for sixty years while the dictator Tito ruled (what was then Yugoslavia).
The royal palace had survived but Tito had made changes, adding red stars to the painted ceilings and other decor. The Prince showed the crew around including the chair where Tito sat to watch films and so on.
"How come you haven't changed it back?" he was asked.
"Because only tyrants erase history" was his reply.

Oh... this sounds crazy... If they won't patronize other versions of the bible other than the King James version, they don't need to burn them. That is the highest form of fanaticism. All they need to do is don't buy them.
Regarding burning of books written by Rick Warren and that of Billy Graham, well, I've read one of the books of Mr. Warren entitled Purpose Driven Life, it was good. In fact it was enlightening. Well, we don't really know the rationale of their action, but i find it unreasonable burning books. But it is their right as well.
