Interracial couple denied marriage license in La.

Wow, I never thought this would happen so blatantly in this day and age, but here we have a judge, who refused to give a marriage license to a couple because they weren't the same race. This moron claims it's unhealthy for their children and most interracial couples don't last. I really hope this moron gets thrown off the bench. Race should NEVER be a factor in determining if someone gets a marriage license. If you live in Louisiana, now would be a good time to call your local state reps and senators about dealing with this pud. : http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091015/ap_on_re_us/us_interracial_rebuff;_ylt=AsuaipWPhzJ5DWpfelXSOnJ0fNdF

This really surprises me. The judge has no ground to refuse marrying a couple . He says that the children will not be treated well. This may be true, but we as a society have to fight these prejudices and we cannot do that by looking the other way. I hope this judge gets pilled up for his barbaric behaviour. Moreover, the concept of race is a myth. If one were to look into the genealogy of various people we would all have strains from various groups.

Yeah, it sort of caught me by surprise, too. Like turning over a rock & suddenly seeing all these uggy grubby ugly bugs creeping & crawling out. (shudder...) What you say is 100% true about the "races." In fact, I KNOW that judge has mixed blood. Hasn't science (& the genome project) proven that? I mean, it's been established for ever since I can remember that humanity began in Africa & gradually spread out across the world. Ultimately we have only one "race" that counts: the human race. Say! Does this mean that if we live in the USA, we're all "African-Americans?" I mean, if people want to blame Christoforo Colombo (born centuries ago) for perpetrating the attitudes of his day, & therefore demand he be wiped out of history books because today's Amerinds are still peeyoed about it, then why can't all of us go all the way back to day zero, & claim our full heritage, too? Hmmm? (tweak!) Maggiepie OBAMA'S PRESIDENCY IS ILLEGAL. PERIOD.

I thought I had heard it wrong the first time I heard this story today. Whatta moron that judge is. He definitely should be off the bench...not just because of this issue but who knows how many other times he's used his prejudice in his rulings?

I know. When I saw the title, I figure there HAD to be more to the story like one just wanted a green card or something. Typically titles like that are just sensational to make you read, but this turned out to be real. He claims he's only done it four other times, but then there's really no way to verify such a claim. I'm just amazed nobody has brought it to the media before this or tried to sue for discrimination.

I am probably going to be called a racist for this but as a conservative commenter, it happens all the time so here goes. I am merely commenting to correct a misconception about this story. The guy in question isn't a sitting judge, he's merely a Justice of the Peace. That is, he performs civil ceremonies and then signs the marriage license. He didn't tell them they couldn't have a license or get married, just that he wouldn't do it. In fact, they could go to any other licensed JP and get married, and his wife referred the couple to another JP. Now, does that mean he was right to refuse them? No, but it wasn't a decision with any force of law, it was based on his own opinions. I don't know why he holds these opinions, maybe he's known bi-racial individuals who suffered because of the society they grew up in. Maybe he is a racist. I don't know. I believe that society is much more accepting of interracial couples and their children, but he apparently does not believe that. I don't know if he broke any discrimination laws. I don't know if he has the right to refuse any couple or must take all comers if they will pay his fee. If the law states that he must accept any couple with the right paperwork, then yes, he should lose his license for breaking the law. If the law allows him to marry whomever he will or not marry whomever he does not wish to, then I think that he probably will just see that a lot of couples will avoid using him in the future.

A very well-reasoned response. I don't know the conscience of this man but it is clear that he made this decision based on his own conscience. Whether the decision was made from racist feelings or from some conviction that he was doing the right thing for their children, I can't say. There are both black and white people who don't believe in race-mixing. We can disapprove of their attitudes, disagree with them, even try to change their minds, but we can't criminalize their thoughts as you point out. If they take illegal actions, such as discrimination that is outlawed, then we can punish them for actions. I know people who would never consider dating someone who is overweight, or a smoker, or in some cases there are those who would automatically disqualify people based on hair color and education. I can't tell these people that they must be equality minded and date anyone who will agree to date them. I might think they are being shallow, but I can't stop them from being shallow. If this JP broke a law, then he should pay the penalty for that. If not, then there's really nothing anyone can or should do. He couldn't stop them from getting married, and he didn't. He just did not perform the ceremony. I think he has that right as long as the law doesn't state otherwise. We all need to resist the thought police, they are everywhere. They will come for each of us eventually if we do not stop them before they get more powerful.

Both of you make good points, sedately reasoned. It reminds me, though, of a discussion I've been thinking of launching, very soon, to be called "GLOBALLY ACCEPTABLE TRUTH." The answer to who decides what we get to say is true is soon to be the U.N. There is a movement (by the title above in paragraph one) afoot in that anti-American body to coerce by law (well, the US Left needs no "coercion--they already use it) everyone to accept what they determine is "true." There will be ugly results for any who dare to dissent. If you want to discuss the End of Days, this might be a good place to start, although I will only touch on it briefly in my upcoming post. Regardless, given the political ideology now in power here (& elsewhere), it's one scary thought. Maggiepie OBAMA'S PRESIDENCY IS ILLEGAL. PERIOD.

I had a friend who wanted to get re married here in the state I live in. They have a three day waiting period here and they didn't want to wait. So they went to Arkansas, just about 20 miles down the road, because Arkansas does not require a waiting period. They were both divorced and where surprised that the JP asked them if either had been married before...(they were in their 40's) When they replied that this was the second marriage for both of them...he sent them away. Said it was against his conscience to marry divorced persons. I don't know if it is illegal to do this or not. Apparently it isn't. But now that it has been brought to light, someone will do their best to make a law against it. The JP who would not marry an interracial couple may or may not have had racist reasons. Could be that he truly believed that children of mixed race do not fare well in society. I stated in an earlier response that most of the citizens of LA are not racist, before I heard the rest of the story from you. It still stands. There are many in this country who are being labeled as racist who are not. I've been to Louisiana and currently work with a woman who was displaced by Katrina. She is not racist, but she does not believe in race mixing. I'm sure many will disagree with me that the two opinions can be exclusive of one another. She doesn't think that blacks are inferior, or that they should not have equal rights. But she does think that mixing the races weakens both races involved. While I do not agree with her on this, I don't think it is racist in the true sense of the word. I do admire someone who can stand against 'public opinion' for what they believe in their heart to be right. Don't see that often. I also believe that people are jumping on the racist bandwagon...labelling everyone racist who does not care for Obama's policies and plans....to be weakening the true meaning of the word 'racist'. Racism is much more than thoughts or beliefs. It is LEGAL ACTIONS designed to persecute a supposedly inferior race of people. It IS evil because the group in power uses that power to destroy others. We are about to enter a time in history when if you do not agree with those in power, you will 'disappear'. There are laws against thoughts, and this is dangerous for all of us. Who gets to decide what thoughts you can have? Who has the power to put you in prision for believing something? People can feel superior in that they say they are politically correct...but what if the opinion on what is 'correct' changes? And suddenly YOU are the one being hounded as a criminal? People think that we are moving towards a more tolerant society...with these 'hate crimes' laws....but in reality we are moving towards legal intolerance once again. Where one belief system is in power and any other is persecuted. You can't pass a law againt belief of one kind....because then you are opening the door for YOUR beliefs to be criminal.

Actually statistics actually show that interracial marriages last much longer than same race marriages so I'm not sure what was going through this Judge's head when he ruled this.. He probably had a fight with his wife and took out on the two lovers.. arrogant pr*ck he is..

That's kind of a sad story. I know racism still exists, but I can't understand it... Hey, my ex girlfriend was asian, and I am white. We were together for 9 months. It's not that much, but we were really happy together and I had a lot of new experiences with her. I didn't think one time that our races could make anything different, and our breakup didn't have anything to do with it either...

Might not be a bad idea to write to the president too. Isn't he of mixed race? I have a friend who is white who has a black husband, and three of the most beautiful daughters possible. My parents are both white, and they hate eachother's guts. My husband has three white ex-wives, and he's white too.

It's not an issue for the president since this guy works for the state or county, not the federal government. Marriage is a state issue.

I must echo your "wow" with my own WOW!! I saw this going along the bottom line scroll this morning and I actually had to rewind it because I thought I'd read it wrong. I was just about to look it up online to get more details when I saw this discussion. This is ridiculous and ridiculously sad! I definitely believe this judge should be removed. I know if I lived in Louisiana or if something like this happened in MY state I'd be contacting my lawmakers about it already. Guess what, Taskr? We're in total agreement! No wonder we're having an early winter storm in my area...lol! Annie

I didn't think that sort of thing would happen in this day and age. I thought that racism didn't happen anymore in law and order. It is terrible that the judge refused to give the inter racial couple a marriage license. Just the other day a friend and I were saying how lovely a mix raced child looks. Black skin is beautiful and a skin color that is lighter than black but darker that white is wonderful. It is possible for a mixed race child to be into both their identities for example American and Kenyan. One of my male friends who is white has married a black lady. They are both great people and they make a lovely match. They look forward to starting a family soon.

It's a pity the judge is so ignorant he can't even realize that more interracial marriages and biracial children would mean a more accepting population in the future. I was amazed and disgusted to see this can happen. Keep in mind though, this is a state that has put people like David Duke into elected office.

Maybe the judge was wrong. I don't know. But is it wrong to fault a person for their opinion, or to force them to act in a way that's against their beliefs? What about the minister who believes marriage should be between a man and a woman only and won't marry a homosexual couple? Should that minister be forced to deny his beliefs and do what he feels is a sin? If your conscience told you something was wrong, how would you like being forced to do it anyway? I sure there were other judges who would give this couple a license. I see no reason to make a big deal about it.

That's different as the minister and his religious convictions regarding gay marriage are protected by the first amendment. Only New Jersey fails to respect that. This guy doesn't have that. He has his own bigotry in feeling that interracial couples can not marry and THAT is in direct violation of the constitution which prohibits discrimination based on race.

Don't worry Debra, I know LA is a big state and obviously people like this are not in the majority. It's just sad that there are parts of LA, and other states, where a person can openly behave in this manner. Most racists these days at least KNOW that they're attitudes are wrong and not socially acceptable. It's scary when someone not only is open about such things, but insists it isn't racist.

Taskr, it's not just racist, & not even just dumb. He ought to honestly admit his objections. But instead of being proud & standing up for what he believes (frankly because he knows damned well he's wrong), here he is acting like a weasel. Ptui. I'm not going to waste much more time on him. He's part of a disappearing populace. And it can't happen soon enough to satisfy me. I wonder if he has any redeeming qualities? Maybe his dawg thinks so, me...I dunno. Can a judge (somebody who's supposedly knowledgeable about laws and rights) do that? He must know that he could be slapped with a discrimination charge, right? He's so clearly a racist. Did he say anything about not marrying other types of "doomed to fail" couples?
