In these times of recession many of us including myself are tempted to economise and find ways to minimise use of materials .There was a time when I would reuse cooking oil or use it for an extended period of time but then I was told that that increase the saturated fat content of the oil and similarly increase the likelihood of getting heart problems ?
Do you reuse oil and if so for what purposes oh I guess I should have asked if you use oil any at all for cooking purposes and have you ever heard about the increase in saturated fat content due to reuse

We've always been re-using cooking oil at home. What we usually do is that we filter out the food residues from frying, by using a funnel and sometimes a cloth to really filter out those small pieces. We use vegetable oil though and I'm not really sure if that doesn't increase or have too much saturated fat content in it.

I rarely deep fry but if I do I tend to strain the oil and use it again. It does depend what the oil was originally used for. Lately I have been using small amounts of olive oil for cooking meat; eggs etc and I certainly cannot reuse that oil! I am not aware of fat content and the like and I don’t see what difference it would make if it has been used before but you may well be right. I am not too concerned because we rarely reuse oil anyway.

I do reuse reuse cooking oil that I have deep fried in. I shake off any extra batter. First I make sure that nothing is left in the oil. I filter the oil while it is till hot too. I turn off the heat as soon as I finish deep frying a move the pot off the burner. Never mix oils either. Then I store it in a dark cool place. I only use it about 3 times.

I re-use it all the time, unless it was used to cook fish.

I DO USE OIL WHEN I FRY SOMETHING SUCH AS CHICKEN OR some kind of meat. I do reuse it once. I pour it through a strainer & use it one time. I don't know anything about the increase in saturated fats, Have a good weekend , RONNYB.

You can reuse cooking oil things like sunflower or olive oil just make sure you don't burn it when you put it back after straining it.My mother in law uses lard and had the same bowl for ages ,she just keeps tipping the fat from the joint or from frying an egg,she is 86 yrs old and has never had any problems with her heart. Not that I have fried food in her house! I think we all worry far to much these days, when I worked as a cook at the old peoples home we only had the fat in deep fat fryer changed once every six weeks and that was fine.So don't worry about use your oil like you did before you will be fine.sometimes it is a wonder we survive at all with all the advise being thrown around.carry on saving your money.suex

I have reused it in the past. a few years ago, I was given a deep fryer. It was an amazing little appliance. We went thru a spell of at least once a week having a "deep fry dinner". We fried chicken, fish, potatoes, onion rings and bread dough. It was delicious and fun. I did not even think about heart issues. Normally we ate pretty healthy meals. Anyway, I did re-use the oil 2 or 3 times before discarding it. The tradition got broken when I lent the fryer out to my brother. After a time I forgot about it and apparently so did he because to this day I have not gotten it back. Other than that time period, I really don't use oil for much of anything. I do keep it in my cupboard in case a recipe calls for it and I use it when cooking pasta as it helps keep it from sticking together. A bottle of oil will last me for so so long that it would not occur to me to re-use it now.

I reused used oil before but now a days I avoid using it as I just read that used reused cooking is not good to repetitively used as it have a carcinogen elements which could cause cancer. So I avoid using reused oil and prefer to use new cooking oil to ensure cleanliness of frying food and safeguard the health of my family.

It's common in every household in the country I live in. Some knows about the effect of reused oil when it comes to health but still they use it. It's a great way to save money but be sure not to reuse the oil for so many times. I think you can use the same oil twice, the max, depending on what you cooked in it.

I reuse cooking oil only if it is still clear. i don't reuse oil that was used for frying fish or dried fish. Yes, saturated fat increase if you use it over again. This holds specially true if you used the oil for frying fatty meats.

Yes, I do all the time! It is actually not that bad if you keep your used cooking oil in a container after you use it. I made homemade french fries about a week ago and I would pour the cooking oil into a container and I would reuse that oil on french fries when I plan on making them again. All I suggest is that you don't use the used cooking oil again after 1 week of not using it. But its ok.

I reuse my cooking oil. I usually use canola or vegetable oils. I learned from my Mom many years ago that there are things that will leave the oil clean and reusable, such as frying potatoes. I also have a deep fat fryer that uses about two quarts of oil in it, and I sure wouldn't want to keep buying cooking oil for it.
I have never heard of reusing cooking oil increasing the likelihood of having heart problems. Of course it would also depend on how much fried food the person consumes, the genetic make up of the family, and the cholesterol levels and the weight of the person. The only thing that might make the cooking oil unusable is the breakdown of the composition of the oil from many uses and overheating the oil frequently. As for an increase of saturated fat, I would think that reusing the oil wouldn't increase the saturated fat, the saturated fat content is a stable content and really can't increase unless you are frying a fatty food in the oil before you reuse it.

Hi Ronnyb!
Yes, I do reuse cooking oil, and I don't use neither olive oil nor vegetable oil. I am thinking of change it, although olive and vegetable oil are expensive in my country. I know that reuse it will increase the saturated fat, as you said, and it may increase the chance of getting heart problems, but since oil is not cheap, well what can I do? Therefore, I try to limit the use of cooling oil for twice, or sometimes if it's too dark to use for the first time, I don't use it anymore. I cook anything that don't turn the oil dark, then I can reuse it to cook fish. Fish will be always cooked lst if I have to use reused oil. Sometimes, I also use butter instead of oil if I want to cook something easy like eggs or onions.
Happy mylotting to you.

I only use sunflower oil to deep fry. But I live alone and if I want some fried potatoes, I only fry one or two. So I save that oil in a jar (I use a colander just in case there are some bits of food) and place it in the fridge. I don´t use that oil to fry eggs because they will stick, but I can use it for all kinds of fritters for a reasonable amount of time.

We usually reuse cooking oil, specially those that we use for deep frying, we use it like for 2 or 3 times, depending on what we cooked with it. I haven't heard the fact about the saturated fat.. well, I guess I'm going to research on it now, cause if it's that unhealthy then I guess we should stop doing it. hehehe. Anyway, thanks for the info on this one.

Due to my mom's recent illness we have reduced the amount of cooking oil that we usually use. When I do use cooking oil it is to fry dumlings, fesivals, chicken, plantain chips and fish. When I use oil for thess purpose I usually reuse it. In the case of chicken and fish I discard the oil because it would be too spicy for other purposes. I think it is a terrible waste to throw away so much oil. However I only use it the one time after.
