Linux should be the preferred OS for everybody who uses pirated Windows!! Windows is popular only because of volume of users.

I am a linux lover and one of my pcs is loaded with Gentoo Linux which i use for my daily purposes and for downloading using bittorrent. Although the installation and initial catchup is a little difficult in linux but once you get to know it you will fall in love with it. My other PC is loaded with a genuine copy of Windows XP which i mainly use for multimedia purposes and gaming. I will upgrade to Windows Vista when it releases . I liked the beta version very much especially their new user interface with which they finally managed to challenge the best linux user interfaces out there. Gaming is one area Linux is yet to catch up in which the windows has a big advantage. Windows is very user friendly easy to use OS but you wont get the power, safety, stability and security you get on linux. Also linux has great community support and lot of open source free programs for all kind of purposes. I just love linux. I haven't tried MAC yet because i just dont have the hardware for it. Since its based on UNIX i think i will love it too.

so this is a war between microsoft & linux.most begainer & common users prefers ms os like(win98,2000,2003,xp,vista) as microsoft progresses they trying to make there os user friendly (by adding such feature like capibility of finding & installing most of new hardwares,cd.dvd autoplay etc.........)but linux is a diffrent thing when more & more sicurity is needed linux is the best choise.ms os gets infected very quickly by virus, spyare, addware, malware if no antivirus is used online. for simplicity use ms os & for sicurity use linux

I prefer Linux.
Apart from the fact that it's freely distributed, Linux's functionality, adaptability and robustness, has made it the main alternative for proprietary Unix and Microsoft operating systems. IBM, Hewlett-Packard and other giants of the computing world have embraced Linux and support its ongoing development. More than a decade after its initial release, Linux is being adopted worldwide as a server platform primarily. Its use as a home and office desktop operating system is also on the rise. The operating system can also be incorporated directly into microchips in a process called "embedding" and is increasingly being used this way in appliances and devices.

FreeBSD
FreeBSD is extremely robust. There are numerous testimonials of active servers with uptimes measured in years. The new Soft Updates file system optimizes disk I/O for high performance, yet still ensures reliability for transaction based applications, such as databases.
FreeBSD is the system of choice for high performance net-
work applications. FreeBSD will outperform other systems
when running on equivalent hardware. The largest and busiest public server on the Internet, at ftp.freesoftware.com, uses FreeBSD to serve more than 1.2 terabyte/day of downloads. FreeBSD is used by Yahoo!, Qwest, and many others as their main server OS because of its ability to handle heavy network traffic with high performance and rock stable reliability.
FreeBSD has been the subject of a massive auditing project
for several years. All of the critical system components have
been checked and rechecked for security-related errors. The entire system is open source so the security of the system can and has been verified by third parties. A default FreeBSD installation has yet to be affected by a single CERT security advisory in 2000. FreeBSD also has the notion of kernel security levels, virtual server jails, capabilities, ACLs, and a very robust packet filtering firewall system.
FreeBSD includes a very robust packet filtering firewall system and many intrusion detection tools.
