Sports Rivalries

My dad is watching college football and Texas is playing OU (Oklahoma University). He's getting pretty worked up over it. I'm sitting and watching him, because to me, he is putting on a show better than the football game (American football). People in Oklahoma really get into the Texas/OU rivalry. I know Texas is the same way.
The biggest rivalry I get into is the Yankees/Red Sox. I am a huge Yankee fan. Of course a lot of people hate the New York Yankees. But I have high hopes they will win the World Series this year. But still yet, I don't get sick over the rivalry like I've seen some fans do (about their respective favorite teams, not necessarily a baseball or football rivalry).
Tell me about the biggest matchup or rivalry that you "get into". I'm not into soccer (football to everyone besides Americans), but I'm sure there are a lot of those in that sport. Tell me about yours, and if you don't have one, what about where you live? What kind of rivalry do they get into where you live?

Happy sat. Ambie, I can just see your dad. We all all big fans of the tennessee volunteers here. My youngest son is the worse. His blood runs orange instead of red, lol. I watch all the games on tv when tennessee is playin so guess mine runs orange to. I also watch the colts play but that is basically because of peyton manning who use to play for tennessee to. GO VOLS!! GOOD LUCK MONDAY, WILL BE THINKING OF U.

I love watching football, tennis and cricket. The most preferred match in football by me is Argentina vs Brazil or Germany. In tennis, I love watching Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal playing head to head. In cricket, like almost everyone, I love watching India taking on Pakistan and also the rival Ashes series played between England and Australia.

I live in Austin, so you KNOW the city's crazy with the "Red River Showdown" right now.
I could care less, I don't care for most team sports - so I don't get into rivalries... Now, I do like the Green Bay Packers, because the team is owned by the town and I like the Yankees because I grew up with them, my dad was a fan. - but just because I like the teams, doesn't mean I like the sports, and will pretty much only watch jumping on TV.

my partner is really bad for it, i don't like watching live games with him. cause he's gets annoyed at things, he's a rugby league fan. my work mate didn't even come over this and watch the game between his team and my partners, thou the pair of them don't really talk any way. but we be polite and ask him over, just to watch the game and have a nice night. i'm not fused on the game and would rather read a book or sit on the net.

My husband is watching the OU/Texas game as well. As usual, he's going to be hoarse after watching it. I don't really follow football, so to me it's time on the computer. After all, it's not like the Red Sox/Yankee rivalry...lol. Being from Massachusetts, you know which side of that I'm on, right? Since the Sox are out of it for this year, I'm hoping for a Dodgers/Yankees World Series. I think Joe Torre was given the shaft, and I'd get a lot of satisfaction if he beat his old boss.
Rivalries are fun, as long as they aren't taken too seriously. I used to work for national a customer service call center. One day I had a male caller from NYc. So, in conversation I asked if he was a Yankees or Mets fan. When he told me he was a Yankee fan, I told him that I'd seen him on tv at one of the games. When asked how I knew it was him, I said it was the lone fan in the bleachers with a Red Sox hat on. He almost chocked laughing.

I'm wanting a Dodger/Yankee matchup too. And I know it's kind of disloyal, but if the Dodgers won, I wouldn't be incredibly sad. I too think Torre was treated badly. On one hand I love Jeter and the Yanks, on the other, Torre was a class act.

Football.....I love our Minnesota Vikings! When we play Green Bay WI now it's a very big deal with Brett Farve on the Minnesota side now......anyway....I don't get worked up over it though...but like to throw a few jabs to my friends who live in Wisconsin.....my friends husband had a birthday three days after mine...so I got him a bright yellow cap to wear to coffee each morning that has the Vikings logo on it! LOL

hi ambiepam ohhere in Ca we root for the angels baseball team to win and for the Lakers to win, and we do get all excited but I have never got sick over the rivalry at all. just enjoy and whoever wins will win. it is a lot of fun to watch the games, specially the baseball games and root for the home team at the seventh inning stretch. so a lot of us are Angel fans and Lakers fans. it is funny that the Anaheim Angels are now called Los Angeles Angels when they still have their stadium in Anaheim Ca for heaven's sakes. odd indeed. guess LA put up a lot of money on that one while Anaheim built a whole new stadium just for the Angels.

I think it is one of the weirdest things, that they are the LA Angels of Anaheim. I remember when they first announced the new name...back when they won the World Series, they were who I was rooting for. I SO wanted them to beat the SF Giants and they did. Anything so Barry Bonds wouldn't win.

Here is Australia we have Aussie Rules Football; I’m not a sports fan and I rarely watch it but it is like a religion for most people here so it is hard to miss what is going on. A few years ago we used to have different leagues in different states the biggest being the Western Australian league and the Victorian league and the big match of the year used to be the Victoria versus Western Australia the State of Origin match.
These days we have the Australian Football League and the biggest feud now in our own state is when our two Western Australian teams The Fremantle Dockers and The West Coast Eagles battle each other.

I live in North Carolina, and this is college basketball country. The biggest rivalry around here by far is Duke vs. Carolina. It could easily be a holiday the next day after the Duke/Carolina game. Probably more people call in sick the next day at work than any other day including the SuperBowl. These are two of the most prestigous basketball programs in America, but when these two play each other the gloves come off. There have been books written about it and movies made about it.

Sorry, dear Ambie, it has taken me so long to respond...I had a busy 4 days (will post about it later)!
Everyone..(most everyone) on this small Island is a transplant...lots of Brits, lot's of Americans...lots from other Provinces, and the only BIG SCREEN T.V., for watching all forms of Sports is at the Local Pub....get the picture...a few pints and ribaldry gets wild! Right now...it's FIFA, end of November it will be our "Grey Cup" which is the trophy for the Best Canadian Football team...and BOY, does that get lively....and then in Apr/May it is the Stanley Cup for NHL Hockey!
I prefer to watch at home....as with all the noise...I tend to miss toooo much of the game! Cheers, dear Ambie!
