does the best man have to give a speech or a toast at a wedding reception?

that is the tradition..its been my experience,that it is also acceptable for the maid of honor to do it. If its your wedding,you can have it set up however you would like,i have been to a wedding,that do not follow the normal tradition and they have been wonderful. If you do not want people to give a speech,do dances and play wedding games,it is perfectly fine..

It's traditional that he does them both. But make sure you find the find the right guy to do this. HE can make it memorable or he can ruin it, but yeah, it's traditional.
