Buying stocks and keep them as retirement fund??

hi all, So how do you think of investing into stocks and share of a company as your retirement. I always wanted to make investment thru stock and share. However i had no courage. As stock and share are very volatile. i afraid might lose my entire fund overnight. So do you think by the time u retired, you can accumlate enough for your retire fund thru stock and shares? Pls share your opionions:)
