WHat is the best way to get into the photography field?

My girlfriend loves photography and is having trouble figuring out what see wants to go for a career. She loves photography and has worked at two portrait studios. But, she doesn't want to work in portrait studios. She wants to do either freelance photography or some other type of full time more creative photography.
