.....Halloween decorations? Tonight I finally decided to get off my butt and not be glued to the computer all day and night and start decorating my apartment for Halloween. I still need to decorate the outside of the door and plan to do that either tomorrow or the next day. So after I came home from both doing a bit of grocery shopping and stopping by to visit a friend I got cracking at decorating. Now naturally I have quite a lot of store bought decorations that I've collected over the years, but then I've done some rather cute homemade decorations. One of the simplest I do is to make "ghosties" out of either tissues, paper towels (Bounty works best), and even medium and/or kitchen sized garbage bags. What I do say for the tissues, is take one tissue, then another and cut it in half and crumple it and stuff the center of the other tissue with the crumpled up one..then gather at the top and tie it with either black or orange yarn..then use a marker to make the eyes, nose and mouth. Well I tonight I wanted to hang one of my larger ghosties on my wall, but thought, nuts white and white just would look kind of weird, so wanted a black ghostie for a change, but didn't have any black garbage bags...then I remembered I had some small sized black grocery bags (the kind one often gets at a dollar store when buying there)--so grabbed two of the bags and started stuffing the top for the head part....but then something new struck me. The way the bag was shaped it lend itself for "ears", yes "ears" at least that's how it looked to me...not only that but the way the head part came out, it looked like a cat's head...so decided, hey I just designed a new thing...a cat ghost! I grabbed my orange acrylic paint, painted cat-shaped eyes a nose, and a grin...tied it up at the "neck" part with orange yarn and presto..like I said a cat ghostie. I plan to make more when I decorate the door. So have you not only made your own Halloween decorations (or any holiday themed decorations) but made them out of really insanely easy materials that you had on hand??

They sound great pye! We don’t really celebrate Halloween here although my daughter goes trick or treating with her dad but not too many kids do it. She came home with so much stuff; some people even gave her money! I rarely see Halloween decorations here but yours sound like so much fun that I may even start making some anyway!

She has asked her Dad to take her again and being the smart girl that she is she says she prefers money because that will buy her the best chocolate!

um..i usually start early in the year and make things from sculpy. i made a pretty cool light up cat with crystal eyes one year-ended up selling it because a parent who came by trick or treating wanted it. y'gotta love unintentional craft sales. i'd love to see the cat ghostie-that sounds cool

Hi pye, What a clever person you are, I could never make anything and not only that, I live with hubby and he don't like any decos round the house, the such a misery, but I do have small couldrons and pumpkins hanging, alos my big witch doll I have standing near the door, I also have another witch that cackles and her eyes lightsup and then she takes a leap, so I think its good enough, well so the hubby says. Bright Blessings. Tamara

I think I made my own decorations out of necessity since being on a budget can't always buy ready made stuff...so over the years, yes, have gotten very inventive..LOL aww-shame your hubby doesn't go for much decorating...booo...hissssss

sure, when i was young, about 13-14 years old i maked a big halloween pumpkin, and skeletons to hang in my room and other halloween things. But here in italy we don't have halloween, so it's difficult to find decorations or other halloween otside. But in the last years there are more halloween festivals here, there is one party in a big restourant this years, i'll go there dressed as a mad mad doctor, my girlfriend will dress herself as a nurse *ç* .

I don't really decorate for occasions, but I do hang up a cross-stitch banner on my door window. I have a nice one of a witch sitting atop a huge jacko'lantern, hoping all your hallowe'en wishes come true. I should put it up.

The kids and I used to do alot of decorations for Halloween.....since they are no longer here I sometimes have a hard time digging out my decorations.....My granddaughter is coming today to bake cut out cookies.....but that might be it. I do have to tell you though when my son was little and needed a costume for Halloween I used a big garbage bag...used duck tape on the inside to gather it up and made him into a California raisin.....he won first prize!

I usually make Halloween decorations with my grandkids. We collect as many possible things in the house that can be used for the decorations, then I just let them go to town with thier imaginations and let them create whatever comes to mind! They really have a ball doing this, as it does not always have to be a structured craft that they are making.

I haven't made anything in such a long time that I wonder if I can even remember how to make the things I used to make. Hubby and I used to decorate for every holiday but we don't any more because we're so far off the road that we can barely see the road in the summer time and even with Halloween, the leaves are still on our trees, although not as many, it still hides our decorations so we gave the idea up. Besides, nobody on either side of our families come and see us so why bother? So we decided that the only holiday we'll decorate for is Christmas from now on because it's such a wonderful holiday to us. I'm still in the process of giving away the rest of my decorations, already gave all our Halloween decorations away to hubby's sister last year but we still have a few for New Years, Valentines day, 4th of July, Thanksgiving and maybe a few in between to get rid of. It was fun while it lasted but it's just too much work when nobody comes to see it.

Aww--you should still decorate. To be honest no one really sees my decorations I have in the apt. since not too many people visit but I like seeing the decorations up myself....

Hey pye! How incredibly adorable that kitty ghost sounds! Please can you take some pictures so that we can see it? I wish I was talented and crafty! I just am so not! I am also not really good at decorating for Halloween! For some reason I just don't like to celebrate because then I get too many kids coming around and in my neighborhood they like to do alot of mischeivious stuff at least the older kids do! I love to see the little kids all dressed up, but as it gets later in the evening the older kids are just plain mean! They throw eggs all over and write in magic markers and just plain make a big mess! So I'm afraid to decorate my door anymore and that really is sad! They've taken all the fun out of one of my favorite holidays!

Nothing at all like Halloween, that's an American thing. We celebrate national holidays relating back to events in history. Oh, we do have Clean Monday in the spring which is 'kite flying day', one can see thousands of kites flying everywhere and villages do big communal feasts. Ours is done a few kilometres up in the hills.
