I have a boxer who is almost 6 months old. She still pee's on the floor and she knows better, because she hides when she does it. I take her out to potty several times a day. She also likes to chew everything including my coach :-( Any suggestions will be appreciated!! Thanks

If you are not currently crate training your puppy that would be my recommendation. Puppies, like all dogs actually, have certain instincts and one of those is to keep their den clean. If you let the dog sleep overnight in his crate he will not mess in it becuase he won't want to sleep in the mess. The crate should be large enough that he can lie down and turn around comfortably but not so large that he could pee in the corner and lie down in the other corner. You may need to put a large empty cardboard box in the back of the crate while he is still a puppy to keep it small enough until he grows to his adult size (as opposed to buying TWO crates). Take away water an hour or two before you go to bed. Put him in his crate overnight. When you get him up in the morning take him out and let him go. As soon as he barely begins praise him by saying "Good Outside!" This will become the cue for him to go poddy. Say those words each and every time he goes poddy outside. Feed twice a day...not free choice food. It is healthier for the dogs to eat and then have some time without. Just divide his daily ration into two feedings and after 20 minutes pick up his food. Allow free choice water all day until about two hours before bed of course to give the dog a chance to empty his bladder before being in the crate all night. Your puppy will need to go after waking up, before a nap, after a nap, after eating, after playing. If you ever see him sniffing anxiously that is your cue. If your dog messes in the house you cannot discipline him unless you CATCH HIM IN THE ACT. If you just see the poop it is TOO LATE. Scolding him then will only create confusion becuase he won't understand why you are tyelling at him. The crate will become a safe place for your puppy...his own den. Put him in it if he becomes too excited or too rough-housey for him to calm down. It also makes traveling easier because he is used to sleeping in his crate. One word of warning: NEVER take your dog out of the crate while he is barking or whining. Once he learns you will respond to that he will bark incessantly! *laughing* Wait until he is calm and then just open the door. Don't force him to come out if he doesn't want to...it should be a safe place for him to retreat to. Eventually your dog will become conditioned to the "Good Outside" cue and you'll be able to take him out and say "Go Outside" and he'll go. :-)

Thanks a lot for this response. We have been wanting to get her a crate. We are pricing them and hope to get one soon. She is doing a lot better since this original post. She is stubborn to say the least, but is a good dog.

lol...... actually they say boxers remain 'kids' until they reach the age of 2-3 and that is 'human' years. So I am bracing myself. I have 3 kids too mind you..... a 6, 4 and a 3 yr old :) Just prayyyyy.... lol

She's a CHILD! :-) It's the equivilant of the "terrible twos" or "terrible threes" that you are going through right now. *laughing* Don't worry...it gets better.

Thanks Perugu. She was giving me advise according to her experience. It is clearly not a medical issue. Thanks though. I take her to the vet when I need to. Other then that I take care of her naturally.

I have crated my baby when I wasn't able to give him my full attention at first.. also at night and when I was gone. Still do at night and when we are gone now at 2 years. I also trained him with a bell on the door.. when he has to go out, he rings it.. it was VERY easy and was ringing the bell by himself within the first week (I brought him home at 6 weeks) Now, chewing.. they have a can of stuff that is REAL stinky, I got mine at Petsmart. I used it a few times on my couch.. bought him a few Nylabones.. never rawhide.. and he hasn't gone back! He still thinks he needs to chew on a few things around the house but he knows what are his as he has his own basket he can get in and out and knows what the word.. DROP IT means...lol.. but hun.. she is young.. boxers don't mature until they are about 2-3 years.. we are still waiting for that time, although he is getting better by the day.. lol. GOOD LUCK!!

i used to have a puppy and its a chow chow. it never pees or do its thing on the floor coz i trained him to do it outside of the house every morning and afternoon. dogs are capable of holding those for at least a day just do not overfeed them so they will be able to control it...and to discourage them from doing it...buy some chemicals that you will spray on the floow so that the dogs would think that it is not ok to do it there.

i think this may be too late as your post was 7 months ago so your boxer will be 13 months now...Boxers are great dogs really receptive to your individual mood plus they are brilliant with children..by the way do you still have a couch or has the dog ate it? Our first Boxer called Maddy managed to chew through a single divan bedframe....however we recycled it and when she had puppies we used the frame of the bed she had destroyed to make a whelping box for her !!Unfortunately we lost Maddy last year through cancer but we still have her pup.. we stil call her the pup even though she will be seven this year!!.. Back to basics...potty training for Boxers is really easy .. should be trained by about 10 weeks..our pups were all hosue trained by the time we sold them at 8 weeks... once they get to a new home though they often need to be retrained.. The pup should be restricted to one part of the house preferably the room nearest back yard door ..usually the kitchen...put used newspapers ..on the floor .. as soona s she pees .take her outside and leave her for about 10 minutes...praise her when she comes back in (even if she has done nothing) take one of the pieces of paper she has peed on and leave it outisde where you want her to pee....you have to watch your pup like a hawk and as soon a she makes to pee pick her up and carry her to the spot you wnat her to pee..usually the newspaper area...always put her outside immediately after a meal and praise her at any time she goes to the toilet...with patience and perserverence she will soon get the message.... as for chewing they usually grow out of this at about 9 months .. it is just a natural chewing action in response to getting their new teeth growing through.... keep special toys for her and dont let her play or chew with household items like shoes or slippers etc if you spot her with anyhting she shouldnt chew take it off her immediately and a quick sharp "no" will suffice.. again she will learn not to chew on your command.....hope this has helped if not for now but for the future...
