How do you reject a marriage proposal without scaring off your boyfriend?

How will you respond if your boyfriend proposed marriage to you but you are not really ready to settle down. It's not that you don't love him it's just that you feel that starting a family is not a good idea for you at this time.

I would tell straight to his face that I am not ready to settle down. It is better to be real than to make a fool out of him just because you don't want to hurt him.

Well if he loves you he wont care, I had my wedding day set, i had everything ready for the go ahead, and two weeks before the wedding i totoally freaked out i went to the travel agents and booked tickets to run away for a couple of weeks abroad!, I phoned my partner and explained i wasnt going through with it and the reasons why, I then told him i was going away and i had an extra ticket if he wanted to come, He came with me and we didnt get married and we are still together now.
