Interest is the best teacher.
When you are have an interest on something that you are not familiar with, then you can try to learn it. If you do like this, you will learn as more as you can in the shortest time and most effective way. If you are always to learn deliberately, you may get half the result with twice the effort. So, don't force you to learn when you don't want to. Just do it when you really need.

There are different styles of learning and, if you're having trouble remembering what you need to know, it would probably be a good idea to use more than one of them.
Instead of just reading what you need to memorize or learn, try reading it out loud. This gets the information into your head through your ears as well as your eyes. Make flash cards. The benefit of using them is that, once you know one, you can put it aside and watch the pile get smaller. Make notes of what you need to learn, organize them and then reorganize them. The act of writing is another learning tool. If you need to memorize facts, try using the first letter of each one and making up a silly sentence. Practice connecting the words in the silly sentence to the information that goes with it. Studying with a partner is also helpful and can be fun if you challange each other and discuss the material in detail. Good luck!
