What kind of video files can I play in dvd players?

Hi friends I don't know which interest to post this discussion. That is why I am posting it here. I download movies from internet and most of them are in .mkv format. I am unable to play those files in my dvd player. So I want to know what format of video files can I play in my DVD player. I dont want to tell my dvd player name because it is not a branded one so I want the general formats that any dvd player can play. Please help me..

it depends on how old your player is. the most common formats that can be played are mpeg, VOB and recently divX. there are many format converters which you can use to convert your downloaded video into any of these formats. you may also check your players manual to find what formats it plays.
