What are the things to do to Motivate STUDENTS?

I think there are things to do to motivate our students. Sometimes, as a newly hired teacher, I usually tried to be friended with my students. I shared to them my previous experiences during my school days... I also make my lessons interesting; I have some games and drills just to arouse their interest. For you, just in case you are a teacher (if you're not) what will you do to motivate your students? Can you give some things to arouse their interests?

It is now a popular way of reward, called:Appreciation Education!First of all you have to know them, understand their mentality! To empathy in order to better communication!Easy not to crticize them because they are strong self-esteem!

hello pede_22, that is a good one. i think i will do the same too. this way my relationship to my students will be better and that they will not feel that i am so strict whatsoever making them scared and worst will not attend to my class anymore. whereas if they are at ease, they can absorb more and understand the lesson better and easier. because i believe that having a good and healthy relationship with our students will make our students not only inspired but also tend to achieve high grades.

As soon as you get their interest, you have them where you want them. The question is HOW? I've tried different methods: starting the session with an interesting/unusual story, trying to relate the topic to my students' interests, showing a movie clip. The trick is that it should "hook" their attention" without taking up a lot of time. For example, I was once teaching listening skills in an EFL class. So I started with showing a video of a clip from the popular sitcom, 'Friends'...you know the one where Phoebe tries teaching Joey to speak French? It's the one where she says one thing, and he hears it as something else! Everybody in my class laughed but they got the message instantly. So, I think the best way is to try and think of attention-grabbers, and that should be enough to get their attention, and get them (your students) to start feeling motivated. What about keeping them motivated? Now, that's another post!

I'm a student in China, I think if the teacher treat us students as firends and adult, we will be active in his or her lesson, otherwise not! You are so young, maybe that would help you to make the harmonious relation! By the way, in your county, it's normal for a 16's child to study in college? In China, the child will be called as whiz kid, we are almost 18 when we go to college!

Hi! :) I just started as an English Tutor to Korean students, and at first it was really hard to catch their interest. But I tried something, I asked each of them what their hobbies are. From their interests and hobbies, I made a lesson plan focused on them. Example, I had a student who loved basketball. I researched on an article about basketball and had him read a story about basketball. Being a conversational English tutor, it was easy to elicit responses from him starting there. For the next day, I researched on great basketball players and he loved that lesson too. I guess it would be a case of catching the attention of your students :) It helps them to stay focused. It's a way of telling them that learning can be fun!

As a student, i find that when my teacher tells us stories about her life as a student and how she was inspired to become a teacher motivates me to work harder as it arouses my interest and helps me to know why this subject is useful. Like when my history teacher tells us some really interesting tidbits about history that we never study of, it motivates us to work harder so the next time we can find those things out ourselves too. :)

I am a teacher also. I know the importance of motivating the students. It is indeed one of the hardest thing to do. As much as possible I wanted my students to be intrinsically motivated rather than extrinsically. I don't want to give them material things frequently because they might get used to it and I am afraid they won't anymore be motivated without those.

Yeah, you're right LdeL0318. Don't always give them some material things but you should also relate them some things that would lead them to realize how imporatnce is Education... God bless to your teaching career!

Depends on the age of the students but mostly I would tell then that studying i the only way to have a future nowadays, only with education you can become a cool citizen and help men kind and so on.. I don't think I would make a good teacher by the way

Classroom interactions always make the student more focus and attentive to the class. These means that avoiding the common method of classroom teaching especially the long narrative discussion wherein only the teacher talks. It should always be a two way discussion wherein student are involved, speaking their taught and giving insights to the lesson at hand.

hi pede.. i am a student but i have tried at teaching also.. as a part of social service from my college i and some of my friends were given the task of teaching children numbers.. the first and fore most conclusion " teaching is a damn difficult job" but soon we realized that we had to develop interest in students to learn something.. so the best way to create interest among them is by becoming one of them.. we made up a plan by setting up different puzzles for children to solve which would lead them to a prize. this idea worked greatly and the children were excited to learn more.. so the play way learning and practical observations are the best ways to create interst among ppl..

You have a wonderful job there, Pede! I'm not a teacher but my mother was and right now, I'm thinking of getting a course on early childhood education. I learned from my mother that motivating your students is one of the hardest part of teaching because students can't learn if they don't listen first. I remember her telling me once that teacher's speech and choice of words are vital that's why she modulates her voice when she teach and she's always jolly or perky even if she's having a headache or other problems. She makes it a point that it's always interactive. She makes a list of ice breakers like old and new games, stories, puzzles, or just anything new around. She also makes research on the top interests of the age group that she's teaching and that made her "cool" to them. I hope this will help. Happy teaching and happy mylotting!
