What is the big deal about traveling first class on an airplane, anyways? Why would people pay more? Once I got "bumped up" to first class, but I still don't know why they chose me.

You may have been "bumped-up" to first class because that was the only seats left.
I tend to get into first class by waiting until the last minute to buy a ticket. I have been told all seats were taken except for first class and refused to pay extra but the airlines don't want to miss out on that money so they will still let you fly at coach price. It's a little more roomier and you get better food and drinks, the seats recline more and the flight attendant is much nicer. On a long flight you get a bigger pillow and a very soft blanket. You can listen to music, your choice or watch a movie. I love flying first class.

yes absolutely you must pay more for the comfort and quality. first class facilities is good, especially the food, the seat and luggage.

When it comes to flight comfort, there's no big difference and it doesn't make travelling faster too. You all get to the destination at the same time. Most of those who are taking first class are either wealthy or company sponsored travels.
Personally I am not willing to pay extra just to go first class.
enjoy life!
