I agree it depends on the ingredients and flavor of the cakes. My auntie who knows how to bake, said when I asked her (because I don't know anything about baking) it is more cheaper and less time consuming if she is buys a ready make cakes. She even added that if only the celebrant did not requested for it, she will only buy ready made cakes from bake shop.

I enjoy baking my own cakes. I seem to be the family member who always bakes everyone's birthday cakes. There are times though when I get lazy. Then i will buy a store bought cake. i don't remember ever going to a bakery for one though. Like you, I get a little lift out of designing a cake. it's another good way to let your creativity flow.

Baking is one of my favorite things to do in the kitchen. Do you like to design different kinds of cakes or is birthday your specialty?

That's really interesting. For me, I prefer to just buy a cake in the cake shop. But then again, for someone special, I think simple baking will surely mean a lot to that person. I'm not a pro, but I can do with those basics..

Hahaha! Lol! This discussion really catches me.
Well, I've already tried some of my mom's recipes and it's great, I love it. I usually bake cakes during Christmas vacations when I get to go home back at my town. But right now when i finally had a job. Seems like time is against me, I usually buy cakes rather than bake one cause i only have few days to go back home to my moms and i just wanna spend time having fun there, getting together with my relatives, spending more time with them, hanging out than consume my time with backing.

Your right there! For many years before, every christmas, shes always there to guide me with her recipe. And after baking, either the cake was good or bad, mom always say that "you did good son, next time i know you'll do better..." And after that, i always feels so great.

If only I know how to bake... I would love to make my own cake and decorate it the way I want. I really appreciate those people who can do their own cakes. I love cakes as much as I love to eat. So what else can I say? I have no choice but to buy cakes from my trusted bake shops.

I love to bake, but the ingredients are way too expensive for me. That's why instead of baking one, I would just buy cakes from bakeshops.

well it depends. My mom is very good at cooking therefore sometimes I ask her to bake my birthday cake like she did this year. Some other times we purchase a cake from the ice cream store because we know the guys who work there and their ice cream cake are delicious :D
On X-mas they will be creating a christmas-tree-shaped cake for us like they did when we were children :D

Up until about two years ago I would always order my cakes from our local grocery bakery and have a the writing and special decorations put on it. Both of my kids have their birthdays in May and they are three day apart from one another so we share there birthdays and I was having one big cake done up so that way they could each have a decoration put on it and it started costing me an arm and a leg so a few years ago I tried making my own and it actually didn't taste that bad. I always liked the cool whip topping that the bakery would do so I looked up the recipe and tried it myself. Trying it myself was what I was worried about tasting bad but like I said it turned out really well and I have been making my own cakes ever since. I now make a cake for both of my kids with their own choice of decorations(as long as I can do it) and it is so much cheaper.

I also don't know hot to bake a cake. That is the reason why I always buy cakes from bakery shops. Also, I like buying cakes from the bakery shops because I like to try different flavors and varieties. I also like comparing cakes from different bakery shops. But if I am given the chance to learn how to bake, I would enroll.

hello amyson, understand your passion for learning and designing cake, when i want to learn a kind of skill,i am also very exiting and hope to learn in one hour.
in my opinion, desiging is a creative and personality thing which need express your own character different from others.Such as,put on the cake with your favorite fruits, shape the cake into your favorite small animals, mix the flour with your favorite spice and so on.
For me,i always buy birthday cakes from the bake shop for my friends or families,i don't know how to bake and i don't have my own machine ingredients.
i would like to learn bake cake i have a chance to do,it will be an interesting thing.

Just depends on how much time I have. There are some very good bakeries that provide an excellent product, but there's nothing as delicious as a homemade hot from the oven pound cake. Perhaps a 7 layer chocolate cake. I find it very relaxing to bake and satisfying to achieve making such as delicious treat for the family.

oh, i grew up with a fantastic baker, my mom was a wonder. Hungarian and first generation American she often fell back on recipes her mother taught her, with a handfull of this and a pinch of that. How big a hand, and who's pinch? we would follow her around and measure each time it was different. and always tasted the same.
cept when we tried it. so, I decided descresion is the better part of valor i hit bakeries. often. very often, much to my weight's horror. My family understands. Quite often, now that my cancer crud has marched on a bit further, i'm more in bed than in kitchen. the rule is when someone goes to the grocery store, standing rule, buy wedding cake. this equals fancy birthday cake, with a cat's name on it, to flat chinese fortune cookies (you can't see all the paper pieces showing how many you ate) so you never know what you get.
by all means, try baking one. try the fancy roses, a tip, use the fondant topping found at craft stores, it handles like clay, it mostly comes in white and chocolate. you can form a rose by pinching off small pieces of it, and building a flower petal by petal. don't have to worry about tube and fancy pieces to fit on it. fresh squished tootsy rolls work too.
good luck
pat

It depends on. If I have a free time and good mood, I'd like to make a cake by myself at home. I like cooking. If I feel like eating the cake suddenly, then I will just buy it from the stores. After all, maybe the professional cakes are much more delicious.
I love China

i do neither! haha my mom is really big into baking things, so for birthdays she makes icecream cake, and for just cake craving, she'll make a regular cake and with icing. but the bake shops do make some nice looking cakes, but the icing is too sweet for me. (:

Hi amyson
All those years i stayed at home, my mom used to bake me cakes on my birthdays ... the cake was rather simple with no cream layer toppings and all but the best part is that my mom made it and so i enjoyed it so much, i haven't had mom's cake for a while now, since i am not living in my home anymore, but yeah when i come during Christmas i get to have lots, and even my relatives bake cake, wow i have never eaten a bakery cake during Christmas coz all my relatives or say most of my relatives all bake cake in their homes, i enjoy them all... i miss the cream a little but well home made is something different!
have a nice day amyson!

Baking is really nice art. But I don't think it's easy to learn. As far as I am concerned I can not learn it. So I will prefer to buy the cake from the market. Even If I know how to bake the cake, I don't think I can make the cake which is available in the market. Because cakes available in the market are baked by experience people and they are the expert in their work. so they know it better. Therefore, I will prefer to leave the responsibility of making the cake to the baker and prefer to take the responsibility to eat it.

I tried my hand at baking a cake once. Till this day i do not know what the hell happened. I followed the exact instructions given in the cookbook only to find that the cake had burnt 5 min before the prescribed time.
That really threw me off. Never attempted after that though. Just started ordering from the bakery.
