How do you end the phone call with telemarketers?

Some people feel intimidated by sales rep's or fund raisers who call by phone and they just... won't... go... away.
I have heard of ways to get them off the phone, but would like to hear from mylotters about how you handle this and better yet, what works.
Your turn...

OH i just love these guy's, i usually tell them to hold on, i have my wife tied up in the basement and she's screaming because she's getting hungry and i dont want her alerting the neighbors, then when their listening real close i blast one of those football game air horns in the phone. Now i dont do it to all of them, just the ones that keep blabbering on and wont let ya get off without hanging up, hmmm wonder why they dont call back. huh what huh what i cant hear you.

I used to actually listen to what some of them had to say and politely tell them i am not interested however they are very persistant and rude about it so its got to the point where i just hang up instantly!

I usually ask them who they want to speak to, then they'll either give me a name or say something like they want to speak to the house owner, so I say "Hold on a minute, I'll get him/her", then I put the phone down on the table, leaving it off the hook, leaving them hanging on in mid-air - then I just get on with whatever I was doing when the phone rang. They soon get fed up with holding on, and it's going on their phone bill too.

Usually I just ignore the call or pick up and hang up immediately. I joined the "Do Not Call List" through the government, but some still get through.
My husband on the other hand, use to answer the phone and give them a piece of his mind. That is until one day a number kept calling that we assumed was a telemarketer because it was out of state. After ignoring it the first two times, my husband gave the guy an ear full the third time. We soon found out it was my uncle calling from Illinois! My husband was completely embarrassed. My uncle found it hilarious though. Needless to say, my husband hasn't done that anymore!

That is a small mistake. I might done it sometimes too, because usually the telemarketers calling the same hour, and you won't know there is someone calling from other places. So, I would normally use the voice mail to record those calling is the best bet.

I don't get many anymore but it would depend on my mood at that moment. If I'm in a good mood I would let them talk then say thank you but I'm not interested. If they continued I would say I said I'm not interested and now I'm handing up. If I'm in a bad mood I just hang up.

I just tell them that I am not interested, and
if that does not work I hang up. If they call
again, I tell them not to call me. So far this
has worked for we. But, I will just hang up on
them.
Have a great day.

I simply hang up the phone, and won't waste my breath to explain to them how obnoxious their calls. I just won't have much time to listen to their pitches over the phone. Please understand, it was my dinner time, and the phone just ringing off the hook, all day. How am I suppose to answer.

On the rare occasion that a telemarketer calls, I usually just say "I'm not interested, thank you. Please take me off your list" and then hang up. Otherwise, if they aren't letting me get a word in..I'll just hang up. Or sometimes when I feel particularly mean, I'll just pick up and hang up when I see that it's a toll-free number.

I have this problem as there are lots of people from different companys that you get,i get the window people then the phone contract people then you get the charity people i tell them i am not interested and then if they do not get that hint i get to the stage of saying no,no,no that seems to work very well.If it do not work then i put the phone down.

here, telemarketers call the office. the usual thing that they call is entice u to get a credit card. i am the one answering phone calls for the office. when i get calls like this, i would say, i'm sorry, we are not allowed to entertain calls like this. we only have one phone and we are letting it free for business calls only. if he further asks for referrals, i would say, please don't attempt to call, a lot have credit cards already and they are under now litigation for non-payment. hahahaha, ok, thanks a lot ma'am and off he hangs the phone. bye...

Start talking about your boyfriend that is cheating on you and what does the caller think - just make up crazy stuff and keep asking their opinion. They will be off the phone in less than 5 minutes and will not call back. It has worked for us in the past - must still be working because we have very few telemarketer calls.

Great question!
If they're not letting me go, I just hang up.
Other times I will be more polite and first say, "Bye-bye" and then hang up.
I have been tempted to do stupid things, like tell them that there's a fire in my oven, and I have to go put it out.
Or even just start talking to them in jibberish so that they have no idea what I'm saying and they'll end up hanging up first - but I have never tried that.
We recently got on the Do-Not-Call list so that has drastically reduced the amount of calls we get.
