For dating purposes

Okay, so I'm not really in a relationship with this girl. However, what are the rules on hand holding or arm locking if you're taking a girl to a formal dance? I just met this girl this semester. Is the convention for hand holding only for exclusive relationships?

I think it's differ from one place to another. Here hand holding=couple, but that might be because where I live couples don't tend to have much phisical contact, (kisses and forward are forbidden till the wedding lol) so every small contact count a LOT.
