Nanowrimo - does anyone here participate?

I'm considering trying my hand at NaNoWriMo this year - National Novel Writers' Month. Every November people sign up to try to write a full novel within one month. I'd like to try it this year, but I'm having a couple of issues - one, I don't know if I'll have enough time available to write that much, especially given that one weekend in November I'm going on a retreat and won't have access to a computer - and two, I have no ideas! Well, one, but I don't think it's enough for a full length novel.
I've never written anything longer than a long short story or short novella, and those were both fanfictions rather than original work.
Do any of you write in NaNoWriMo? If not, does the idea interest you? What are your thoughts and experiences?

I've considered it but unfortunately I've not been doing enough writing the past yr+ to feel confident enough to participate...HOPEFULLY I can get myself back on track and will be able to give it a shot next yr..

I think that's one of the things I like about the NaNoWriMo idea - the point is quantity, not necessarily quality (though of course one hopes for both). I think you're right though, that maybe it's not something everyone can just leap into. I'm not sure I have the willpower to keep up that kind of commitment for a whole month, and I'm really not sure of my writing or my plotcrafting ability.
If you do decide to try - good luck!!!

I'm planning on participating. I have been drumming up buddies all this month (unsuccessfully but at least I'm trying) and the first week of the month I anticipating having a lot of time to work on it. I'm going to be on vacation from work but my friends will all be in their classes during the day so... I'll have some time to kill during the days. I have no ideas yet but I intend to just go on stream of consciousness until I hit on something.

That's awesome! I hope you have some luck getting a writing buddy. For me I think it might be dangerous to have a writing buddy - I'd wind up with a partner in procrastination and distraction. :)
I wish I had a better conception of how much writing 50,000 words really is, a better idea of how much time I'd need to devote to the task to complete it. Everyone writes at a different rate, so it's hard to gague by others' experiences.
Best of luck and have fun!!!

I've done Nanowrimo for maybe 7 years (?) now. Won all but one of them. Really rotten stories and most of the endings are slapped on so it will be finished, but it's still fun. And, a nice sense of accomplishment that says I can write something even if it is crap.

I completed it in 2007. Not the book, but the 50,000 words in a month goal of NaNoWriMo. I tried last year, but majorly failed because I just could not get into what I was working on. This year I do not plan to do it, but I might still end up doing it, as the first year I had no ideas and then ended up starting on November 5th. Last year I also did not have an idea until November, although I actually was trying all October to come up with something. Not even thinking of anything really. I would like to do it, but not going to devote much time unless I get majorly inspired, as I would currently rather focus on my current freelance writing gigs. Also, would rather avoid being haunted by my 2007 work by not creating something new to end up causing anymore emotional drain.

Congratulations on making the 50000 word goal - even if you didn't finish the book, that's still a massive achievement.
I know what you mean about the emotional drain, even though I've never tried a project that large. Any creative work - art, music, writing - is an investment of yourself, and a project like NaNoWriMo makes you concentrate all that creative energy into one month - huge!
Thanks for your reply!
