When you're in your own shoes...

There are times when I find that it is much easier to give advices and comfort to other people, but not to my own self... Do you feel the same way, too?? Are you a good advisor to others, but when it comes to your own self, are you lost??? Please share your thoughts. Thanks in advance!

We should be careful and discriminating in all the advice we give. We should be especially careful in giving advice that we would not think of following ourselves. Most of all, we ought to avoid giving counsel which we don't follow when it damages those who take us at our word.

You got a point there, Bala. When we give somebody advice, we should evaluate whether we will follow the advice or not when we are in the same situation. However, there could be reasons as to why we don't pay heed to our own advices. Could be we need someone to tell us to our face? Because sometimes when we're in dilemma or trouble, it's hard for us to make judgment and be sure of what to do.

Mahathma Gandhi said 'Be the change you want to see in the world'. So we have to lead the way instead of advising which is the easiest thing to do.

Yes, you are correct. I will very easily, advice others and when it comes to me I will ignore all. May be I am a good advisor and that is what I think, because, all my friends, calls me, when they have some problem and seek my advise. i will advise them, they will follow it and come back to thank me for, it worked for them.

It is always good to have some friends who listen and can give us good advices in times of trouble. Your friends are lucky because they have you as their advisor, however, when you are having problems, you think that will be hard too right, following your own advices?? So, I think it will be helpful if you have someone to turn to or even ask other people to guide you as they can help you see clearly and sometimes after a while you will realize that you can pay heed to your own advices.

hi corrycrystal yes I think we all do this sometimes, we just think up the right advice for others, but hesitate to take our own advice. I often wonder why one does this as if your advice is good for others, then why should you not heed your own good advice? We humans are indeed sometimes odd creatures.

Hi, Hatley! Yes, we are very odd creatures indeed. When I think thoroughly about this, I guess it is because we are searching for 'different' advices than paying heed to our own advices. Even though the situation we are in is very similar once faced by somebody we know, we still think that in some ways it is different. It could be because the environment is different or the people who are involved in it have different characters. What do you think??

That's so true I always tell people what is good for them but I don't follow my own words or advise that I tell them. cd

Yes, I am like that as well, cd. I think it's because we already know that when other people are facing problems, they need to hear many encouraging words and advices from others to make a better judgment and when it is us who are in need of help, it will be the other way round because we are not able to think rationally.

I made a similar comment to my husband the other day as I was typing some very good advice for a fellow MyLotter who was facing some problems. To read what I write sometimes one may tend to think that I am ever so wise and well balanced, which is amusing because I am not really so ‘together’ in my own life. I think it is probably common for people to have the “Do as I say and not as I do” attitude. We all know intellectually what is best for us but what we know and what we do is not always the same thing!

I agree with you, Paula. I do write good advices when someone needs advices in their relationships or other things. I always can come up and think of good solutions or something for the other party to consider or follow my advices, but when I am having difficulties in my life, I seldom give myself a chance to advise my own self even though I always think I do know what is best for me. That's why I think it is wise to get the opinions from other people to help us see beyond the horizon to make better decisions.

I'm sorry, I don't understand what you really mean. Why do you say that you are not certain with your past?? Anyway, I see that you are new, so, welcome to myLot!! Hope to hear your comment soon.
