Tom leaves his house and jogs 8 blocks west, 5 blocks south, 3 blocks east, 9 blocks north, 6 blocks east, 12 blocks south, 3 blocks west, and stops to rest. Where is he in relation to his house? Please ONLY tell me how to solve it... please explain it in a very simply way. (If you must give the answer, please tell me how you got it. I have a hard time understanding math. Please help! Thanks!)

Group all the same directions together. Group the north and south together but make south as negative numbers. I think I got 8 blocks south, because my total is negative 8. Then group the east and west together making east as the negative numbers. I think I got 2 blocks west, becaust my total is a positive 2. Therefore he is 2 blocks east and 8 blocks south from th starting point.

So south and east are always negative?

This is the usual convention. Because when you write the directions on a piece of paper, North is usually up and South is down, and West is to the right, and East is to the left. And when you write numbers, positive numbers are usually to the right and above the center(zero); and negative numbers are usually to the left and below zero.

Since he moves in perpendicular coordinates, we can easily find out the net movement along x and along y(Here assume that x is along west to east taking east as +ve and y along south to north taking north as +ve.) Then take sum all movements along west as -ve and subtract from sum of all movements along east. Similarly do for y axis. Then you will get the right position

Consider yourself as a person in the picture. Suppose you are standing at the main door of your house. so now if you want to move to your west in which direction will you head? Obviously on the left hand side...So now consider this u move 'x' blocks towards west(i.e towards your LHS). Now you will have to see in which direction you are facing. If the next condition is such that u have to move in the east direction , then move towards your right hand side from the direction in which you are facing. Always remember, east= right hand side in the direction which you are facing towards. west= left ================"======================================= north=ahead in the direction which you are facing towards. south=behind or in the backward direction.
