How do you cope up with ‘Small hours’.

Hurry up - How to run quickly.

Hi friends! When we get up in the morning, it appears that the clock is ticking at a faster speed and we never come to know how quickly the time passes in the morning. That is why morning hours are called ‘small hours’. I feel that specially, on working days, it is race against the time and one always struggles to complete the tasks in time. How do you manage your affairs in the small hours? Do you also feel that clock runs rapidly in the morning and you always need to hurry up to finish your household and other tasks. Is it also true that those of us who are working, find it difficult to reach their work place in time, many a times? Would like to know your views on it. Thanks in advance.

Here the ‘small hours’ are after midnight and at that time I am usually asleep but not for long because I am always up by four a.m. way before the sun comes because, being a morning person, I am at my best at that time but after seven p.m. don’t bother talking to me (LOL)! Time does fly unnaturally quickly when one has to get ready to be somewhere by a certain time like work or school. I am up so very early, my daughter gets up at seven, school starts at 8.50 and we live across the road from it and lo and behold we still manage to run late on a regular basis, I have no idea how it happens...

Hi Dear Paula! OH! My God, you get up at four a.m. in the morning! Even I do not get up or say rather would not dare to get up so early. I get up between 5.00 a.m. to 5.30 a.m. It is good to know that you come out with your best during those early hours. Hopefully, you get the things ready for your daughter, when she wakes up. I can visualise your early morning position and can feel how you and your little one run up in the morning to reach at school on time. It is indeed interesting to know that her school is across the road, yet you sometimes manage to reach late..........LOL!. Many thanks for telling us about your early hours scenario. Deepak

Hi Deepak! You seeem to be hardpressed for time in the morning ,poor thing, frequently[earlier it was a discussion with time standing still and today it is another one with something to do with time ].Thankfully I do not face this problem much because, I do my work fast. I keep rice at night itself for the lunch to be packed for hte afternoon[for my son].Occasionally, when this does not happen I use the smallest sized cooker and cook half a glass of rice that gets done fast.---I get even the vegetable prepared and keep it in the fridge the previous night.

small hours idiom Also, wee hours. The hours following midnight, as in I stayed up working through the small hours, or The parents didn't come home until the wee hours. The adjectives small and wee both refer to the low numbers of those hours (one o'clock, two o'clock, etc.). [c. 1830] The American Heritage® Dictionary of Idioms by Christine Ammer. Hi Kala! It is very true that I am always rather we both are always hard pressed for time, specially during working days. It remains a very tight schedule and first kids leave one by to their respective school/college, then time for other household jobs and followed by entry of part time maidservant. She comes as per her likings. ……LOL! We always race against the time in the morning…………..LOL! It is good that you finish more than half of your work during the previous night/evening that saves lots of time in the early morning. Moreover, you remain at home and you can manage the things easily in the sense that you can postpone your own tasks, when your son leaves. My better half prefers to prepares fresh dishes for our lunch in the morning, most of times. Moroever, she needs to prepare breakfast and lunch for both the children, which consumes lots of her time because both have difference choices.............LOL! Many thanks for elaborating the definition of ‘small hours’. I feel that I can use the idiom in the context of my discussion. I may add here that me and my better half wake up very early in the morning before sun rise and sun rises after 30-40 minutes of our getting up. Now days, weather is changing and days are getting shorter and nights are getting longer here in Delhi. We get up in the dark every morning. Many thanks again for your triple responses and enriching the post. Deepak

Hi Deepak, but I thought that the small hours were the time between midnight to dawn???!!!! Anyways, morning time is equal to nightmare time for most parents and family people. The clock always races with me though I manage to win most days but now with winter coming, I feel the clock’s running faster and so I too have to keep pace with it. Even on weekends and holidays I think that I’ll finish all my work quickly and then rest for the day but tough luck…no matter how fast I work, its already afternoon by the time I finish. How do I cope? Well, I plan a few things like what to cook and what to make for tiffin, sort out beforehand the clothes that go to the washing machine, plan my office clothes etc! also, since I am doing the same things everyday, it’s a kind of habit and my hands and feet move of their own even without my consciously thinking of it. And then I have clocks in each room (don’t laugh)…so wherever I am, I can always see the time (I think I’ll install one in the loo very soon)…just managing somehow!

Hi Sudipta! You are right and dear Kala has also pointed out that small hours is the time between midnight to dawn. However, I feel that I can use the idiom in the context of my discussion, if you permit me. I may add here that me and my better half wake up very early in the morning before sun rise and sun rises after 30-40 minutes of our getting up. Now days, weather is changing and days are getting shorter and nights are getting longer here in New Delhi. It is good to know that you manage to win most of the days and you can beat the clock, you appear to me an expert in handling household and other sundry jobs and your hands, body, mind all coordinate and work in unison. It is indeed very wise of you that you plan certain tasks in advance and save yourself from morning blues. BTW, do all your clock tell the exact time or there is difference in their timings.......LOL!. I feel that there is nothing wrong in having a clock in each room, it shows that how much importance you give to 'time' and how punctual you are. Also, you can safely get a clock installed each in your washroom, bathroom and loo, so that if you feel that things are getting out of hands, you could hurry up.. We also have clocks in all our rooms and courtyard and kitchen. I have spared the bathroom because I just want to enjoy my bathing.............LOL!For us also it remains a very tight schedule and my better half prepares breakfast and lunch for children, before they leave for their school. Then our own breakfast and lunch and attending to maid servant for doing utensils, mooping, cleaning and washing clothes.........we never come to know how fast the time has passed. We can always be seen racing against the time in the morning and my better half keeps shouting at me, please hurry up. She is quicker and faster like you.......…………..LOL! Many thanks for your interesting responses and enriching the post.

Hi Deepak.. Yes I will be racing with time on all small hours on working days.. How much ever early I get up but still I fall in short of time for some or the other work.. Some Times I even miss my bus while I am completing some household work.. and this makes me get less time to reach office so I need to catch an auto to reach my office in time.. But I manage to reach office sharp at 10 Am.. but If I am late means I try to reach office with in 10.15..

Hi Chaitra! Your response tells that you also get entangled, when coping up with 'small hours'. You are right that sometimes it so happen that we come across some unscheduled work and that makes our schedule more tight. We (me and my better half) both commute together on bike/car, therefore, even if we get late, we can make up some time to reach our respective office. We also face problems in the morning and how much harder we try, we invariably get late to our office.............LOL! When one is required to commute through public transport than one can ill afford to get late. It is always tense time in the morning hours on working days. Thanks for sharing your story of morning hours. Have a great day! Take Care! Deepak

Hee hee - yes, the morning does seem to go by faster, doesn't it? Currently my work is being a stay at home mom - but even so I feel the effects of the "small hours". We often go out for morning activities or classes . . . so I have to get my little one up and running (besides myself) and that's not always done so easily in a timely manner! When driving in the mornings, I have to think of leaving early because everyone else on the road seems to have a destination too that they are in need of getting to in a hurry. So getting somewhere takes extra time with the morning traffic, ON TOP OF trying to get out of the house in time. I am convinced that clock manufacturers do make clocks so they tick faster in the mornings - hee hee!

Hi much2say! So you are also the victum of morning blues, this is what I can comprehend from your response. It also appear true to me that clock manfucterers develop clocks in such a manner that those clocks run faster in during the morning hours.......LOL!. I can understand and visualise your position and can feel how you and your little one run up in the morning to reach at the destination in time. Driving is an additional hassel in the morning, because everybody remains in hurry in the morning and drives faster, which could be dangerous. Many thanks for sharing your morning scenario with us.

Hee hee! Well, I wouldn't say "morning blues" - as that would mean that I see it as a depressing time of the day. I actually love the mornings - even though we are rushed to do things half the time. The rush can be exhilarating - waking us up - and warming us up for the rest of the day. When I used to work at a "job", I loved that the mornings flew by so quickly . . . it meant that I was that much closer to the time to go home - hee hee!!

I can reach on time to work if I want to but I have this severe tardiness to wake up very early. I will never be late if I will be travelling one hour before my work time. Whatever happen, I am too find it difficult to finish task on a given time. I have to exceed a couple of hours just to meet the deadlines. Yes, I am always in a hurry to finish everything. I wish time runs slowly with my life there is so much with a little time in our life for everyday.

Hi Deepak, I didn’t know that it is called as ‘small hours’ I heard it as ‘peak hours’. Thanks for the education. Actually I felt difficulty to prepare my son for school. Now there is little cool so waking him up is a difficult job. He is very slow in his daily activities like brushing, bathing, etc if the School van left then I felt I did the whole day job. House hold works are not a problem if the younger one sleeps more time in morning.

Hi Sree! For exact definition of 'small hours', please see the next response by our dear friend Kala. As far as you are concerned, I can understand your position, because you both are a working couple. For us also, it remains a very busy schedule. Kids leave firstly and before that we are supposed to prepare their lunch and breakfast and do their other sundry jobs, they always remain in hurry, so they direct us to do their jobs, as they get late and we oblige, even if we say that you should have done it the previous night.....LOL! Our part time maidservant also comes in the morning as per her own whims and fancies and we just cannot argue with her for her erratic timings. She comes as per her likings. ……LOL! We can always be seen racing against the time in the morning…………as some war is going to take place.....LOL! Thanks a lot for sharing your morning picture with us.

Yes, i do find it difficult to cope with the "small hours". Though i am an early riser, i still have difficulty having all my chores done before i have to get ready for work. So, i always find myself running late for work and most often i do get late reporting for work. Good thing though, is that our boss is a very very understanding person, that she gives us allowance time. Maybe because she is also a mother and understands us who do not have household help to assists us.

Hello deepak! I actually felt that time is running fast in the morning. One time I was just playing games in facebook and suddenly I found out that it's already 11 am. Sometimes, I have to wake up early to cook for my husband and that's how I cope with it. When I heard the alarm all I did was walk straight to the bathroom and wash my face and then prepare for breakfast.

Hello my friend dpk262006 Ji, I would only say taht we haveneverv felt so. My hubby has been tghroughout in Armed Forces and he always makes scedule, calculate each activitie and assign task to each of us. Even today, if we have to visit our hospital for blood tests etc, we might have to get up at 0400 hrs, take ta, exercise, prepare B'fast, take bath, puja, dress-up,consolidate all documents, take vallet and come-out to catch bus after walking at least for 15 minutes at sharp 0600 hrs. Absolutely, tehre is no problem. There is never small time if people change life style. let;'s never be lethargic. Be smart. There is a golden ule, inherited from parents, whoever finishes all his/her work early mrning before sun-rise, will ave ample of tie. May God bless You and ahve a great time.

Dear friend, when I had to leave the house to work, I always prepared as much as possible the evening before, so as to have less to do in the small hours. I also enjoyed getting up about a half hour earlier than necessary, just to wake up quietly, reflect within my spirit...express inner gratitude. A shower to come fully awake, and then the morning hours seem not so rushed. Regards, Karen

Hi Karen! Many thanks for your invaluable tips. I have taken note of your suggestions. I agree with you that it is better to finish some tasks during the previous night/evening, so as to lessen the burden in the morning. It is good that you can afford to get up half an hour early to your scheduled time and you can finish your tasks quite easily. However, there are some tasks which we can perform only in the morning and when those tasks get added up and in between something unscheduled comes in, things go hay wire. Have a great day! Take Care! Deepak

Hi deepak You are correct. In the morning though, I get up early, I do not know how the time runs but my tasks will be half completed. Before 8 am i must see that my DH coffee and breakfast with suitable side dish should be ready, and my son's porridge should be ready ( he do not like coffee and drinks home made porridge made of 17 types of sprouted, roasted and pounded cereals which then prepared into a healthy drink with added jaggery and elaichi). In the meantime water supply will be stopped at 8 am. So I must store water too and on the other side children and DH will be shouting for their socks or dress or eye card or any other items which they are used to misplace every day and I must help them to retrieve their misplaced ones too. On the whole, it is a mechanical hours for me which makes me run faster than a clock. I think working people's condition is still worse.

Personally, I do not have any issue with "small hours". It is a matter of perception. One day is still 24 hours. Working hours is also fixed. The time to start work is variable. The point is whether you have lunch at 12, 1 or 2pm. That makes the morning long or short. Most who find the morning short have early lunch. After lunch, one tends to be more lethargic and so... achieve less. Some prefer to complete everything by morning so they can have a lax afternoon.

Oh, I know how you feel. Actually on a workday, I don't really think about anything in the morning. It seems that my body knows what it should do, so the moment my alarm clock goes off, I stand up, undress, go to the shower, get out, get dressed have my meal, then off to work like clock-work. I actually decide the night before of what I would wear and prepare my things because my mind can't seem to work that early. I rely on my brain function by itself and no longer 'assess' the situation. Hahaha. Sounds robotic ey? Well, that's it for me, that's why when someone tries to talk to me about something that early, I most probably would give you the wrong answer or none at all. Call it crazy but that's the ratrace for you.

Oh my yes. I work second shift and I notice this. I've worked this shift for years but I remember when I had to be to work early in the morning and had kids to get off as well....how in heck did I do it? I remember I'd get up at some silly hour like 4AM to make sure I had enough time to wake up, shower, get myself ready, get my daughter ready etc. After the other kids came around, my schedule and routine changed but still, mornings were always hectic....always. Now, it is just me and my 15 year old. I guess I could sleep in but I can't. If I sleep past 7 am even tho I rarely get to bed before midnight...I go into rush mode. It's as if I never got out of that pattern.
