Too Much Homework

Is anyone else struggling with having their kids have too much homework? I was told by my 7th graders team of teachers that the general rule for homework is 10 minutes per grade. Therefore, for a 7th grader, that would be 70 minutes of homework per night. My 7th grader typically averages 3 hours of homework each night, not including band practice for 30 minutes, and not including the 25 minutes of mandatory reading each night. I believe that the problem is each teacher has no idea what the other teachers are giving. For example, the math teacher typically assigns about an hour of homework per night. The Spanish teacher is worth about 10-15 minutes per night. Literature and Language Arts is worth about 30 minutes to an hour each night. Social Studies is worth about 15 - 20 minutes each night. Hmmm . . . well beyond the 70 minute mark. I hear the same story from other parents over and over. The problem is that doing so much homework leaves the child with quite a small social life, and no time to just be a kid. What if my son wanted to come home and play legos with his little brother? Is that really so bad? I know when I walk in the door after work, the last thing I want to do is more work. It seems the homework loads have got to decrease so our kids can start learning the joy of being kids.

Thanks for the responses. It would be interesting to hear from a teacher and see what their perspective is.

Too much homework is not good. I think teachers need to be more mindful of how much the children have to deal with. Children can be stressed out too, and like you said, they have no time for their social lives. Perhaps you and some other parents can bring up the issue at a PTA meeting. That’s the only forum I can think of in which a change can begin. I wish you well and I hope the situation can be solved.

My daughter isn't in school yet but I've seen the homework my niece and nephew bring home. I think they get too much. I can understand why they are doing it but at the same time a kid has to have time to be a kid.
