Internet Donations

I recently stumbled upon a site that suggested asking for donations to earn extra money. I have seen websites asking for donations to keep their sites running but never one asking for donations just because. Has anyone ever done this? Is it legal? I would be lying if I said I wasn't interested, but the morality and legality issue's concern me. The thought of just asking for money kind of seems like becoming an internet hobo. What are your thoughts?

Is that donation for charity or helping the third children type of thing, or donation to keep the website running? I can't really donate money if I couldn't know the reason for what, and why. So, what is the reason for donation then?

Yes, you certainly can't tell if someone needs it or not. That's why I only donate if I'm very familiar with the website in question and have been using that website (to comment, purchase items, and so on) for at least 5 months or so. Good luck!

Asking for donations on most websites will get your posts deleted and, if it's done repeatedly, will probably result in an account ban. If you check into the Terms of Use or Terms of Service (TOS) agreements, or even the posting guidelines, sites will stipulate that it is a violation to solicit funds for a cause -- and this can be ANY cause, no matter how much it tugs at the heartstrings or no matter how much the poster believes in its worth. I've seen sites where the owner is offering free software, for example, and has a donation area for people to help support the product and the running of the site. These are fine because the owner controls his or her own site and can pretty much ask for whatever they want (whether they receive it or not is, of course, another thing all together)... but being a participant on someone's site or within someone's forum and asking for money from other members (or any other consideration from which the "asker" would personally benefit) is pretty much an across the board no no.

Well, I'm sure they have a reason for asking for donations. If not, well, I probably wouldn't donate. ^_^ I believe that it's legal to ask without a reason, though it is morally wrong. It's up to you though.
